Head to Head

Zimbabwe hold a narrow 7-6 lead in 14 matches against Ireland. There has been one tie.

In the 1st ODI of this series Zimbabwe won by 38 runs in Belfast.

Ireland Form

Ireland were full of confidence after managing to get a 1-1 draw in their last 50-over series against South Africa. They followed that up with a T20 series win against Zimbabwe, but much like the T20 series began with defeat, so did the ODI series.

On a dry surface in Belfast, Zimbabwe batted first, scoring 266 runs. Simi Singh took 1-22 in 10 overs. Ireland had six bowlers and they all took one wicket.

It was always going to be a tough chase as the wicket slowed down. Scoring was difficult as proven by William Porterfield. He scored 75 runs but that came at a strike rate of under 70. Harry Tector scored 50 runs but no other batsman managed to stay in support as Ireland fell 38 runs short.

Ireland Team News

Ireland shuffled their batting order around a bit. With William Porterfield and Paul Stirling both fit, Andy Balbirnie should continue to bat at three.

Ireland may also opt for another spin bowlers should pitch conditions be similar to the 1st ODI.

Zimbabwe Form

Zimbabwe made a magnificent start to the ODI series, winning the 1st ODI in Belfast by 38 runs. Brendan Taylor provided the impetus up front, scoring 49 off 45 balls.

Craig Ervine anchored the innings with 64 runs while a late blitz by Skandar Raza (59) saw Zimbabwe post 266 for seven in their 50 overs.

That good batting display was backed up by the bowlers, particularly star man, Blessing Muzarabani. Muzarabani took 4-29 to continue his brilliant year. The other bowlers all contributed with no one going at more than six to the over.

In the end Zimbabwe bowled Ireland out to win by 38 runs.

Zimbabwe Team News

The return of Blessing Muzarabani is big for Zimbabwe, as proven in the opening fixture. They shouldn’t change too much from the winning side.
