Australia vs New Zealand Preview & Tips

This is expected to be a very tight contest with Australia favourites according to the bookmakers. It is however New Zealand who have shown great balance within their squad.

My best bet is for the Black Caps to avenge their 2015 ODI Cricket World Cup final defeat.

  • Australia’s David Warner has scored 65, 89* & 49 runs in 3 of his last 5 matches.
  • New Zealand have won 3 of their last 5 matches against Australia.
  • New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell scored 72 runs in his last match.

Head to Head

New Zealand have won three of their last five T20I matches against Australia. They last met in March 2021 where the Black Caps won by seven wickets.

Australia Form

Australia finished second in Group 1, winning four of their five matches. Their only defeat came to table topping England.

Going into the semi-final against Pakistan in Dubai, Australia were underdogs. Aaron Finch elected to bowl first on a good batting wicket. Pakistan went on to score a commanding 176 runs.

In reply, David Warner (49) and Mitchell Marsh (28) got off to a flier but a flurry of wickets saw the Aussies staring down the barrel at 96-5.

It was then that Marcus Stoinis and Matthew Wade came together to rescue the cause. Wade smashed 41 off 17 balls while Stoinis reached 40 off 31. They saw Australia home with an over to spare.

Australia Team News

Australia have hit form at the right time. They will more than likely play the same side that won the semi-final.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand reached the semi-final of the T20 Cricket World Cup by virtue of a second place finish in Group 2. They lost to Pakistan (who topped the table) but won their remaining matches to qualify.

Going into the semi-final against an in-form England side was never going to be easy. The Black Caps bowled first, restricting England to 166 in Abu Dhabi.

The match seemed to be slipping away from New Zealand until Daryl Mtichell (72*) and Devon Conway (46) got together. A superb 27 off 11 balls by James Neesham assisted the Black Caps to get the win with an over to spare.

New Zealand Team News

Devon Conway has been ruled out of the World Cup. The wicket-keeper/batsman got injured whilst showing frustration after being dismissed in the semi-final. Tim Seifert will likely replace him.

Verdict

In a match between two evenly matches sides, I am backing New Zealand to get over the line. Daryl Mitchell is tipped to top score after an incredible innings in the semi-final.

David Warner has hit some great form at the World Cup. Much of Australia's hopes lie with him so I'm backing him to be the best Aussie batsman.
