Australia vs South Africa Preview & Tips

Australia are the bookies favourites heading into this clash which is quite surprising given the form of the two sides. My best is for South Africa to win which is priced at better than even money.

Head to Head

Australia have won three of their last five T20 matches against South Africa. They last met in February 2020 where Australia won by a huge 97 runs.

Australia Form

Australia come into this T20 Cricket World Cup in poor form having lost eight of their last 10 matches. That includes losing their last four series, with the last two ending 4-1 in favour of the West Indies and Bangladesh.

The Aussies scraped past New Zealand in the first T20 warm-up but were hammered by India in their last match. They could only muster 152 runs batting first with Steven Smith top scoring on 57 runs. India cruised to an eight wicket win with more than two overs to spare.

The concern for Australia will be the form of opening pair, David Warner and Aaron Finch. Both are under huge pressure but fortunately Glenn Maxwell is coming off a good IPL and Smith has scored runs in the warm-up games.

Australia Team News

Australia are likely to stick with Finch and Warner at the top of the order for now. Mitchell Marsh is likely to bat at three with Smith and Maxwell to follow. That provides a very solid lineup, if players find form.

On the bowling front Josh Hazelwood, Mitchell Starc and Adam Zampa should be the main three. Ashton Agar Marcus Stoinis, Mitchell Marsh and Glenn Maxwell gives Finch plenty of options should a main bowler have an off day.

South Africa Form

South Africa are for once not considered among the favourites heading into the tournament but they have quietly gone about their business, winning eight of their last 10 T20 matches. That includes victories in their two warm-up matches against Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Against Pakistan, South Africa conceded 186 runs but a magnificent 101 by Rassie van der Dussen saw the Proteas win in the final over.

The Proteas can go deep into this tournament but they will need the likes of Quinton de Kock to fire at the top of the innings. This will be a crucial match with the loser facing an uphill task of qualifying.

South Africa Team News

There is some form in the South African batting ranks with Aiden Markram, Quinton de Kock, Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen all scoring big recently.

On the bowling front the Proteas are also well covered, especially with world no.1 T20 bowler, Tabraiz Shamsi. The leg-spinner is four wickets away from becoming the highest ever wicket-taker in a calendar year.

Verdict

South Africa have won eight of their last 10 T20 matches and are backed to beat an out-of-form Australia. Rassie van der Dussen scored 101 runs last time out so he is tipped to top score and win the man of the match award.

Steven Smith has returned to form in the warm-up matches for the Aussies. He can top score for the third match in a row.
