With the series at 1-1 the decider will take place at Newlands. It is a difficult one to call, particularly with the hosts showing inconsistent form. My best bet is for KL Rahul to score runs in India’s first innings.

India have won five of their last seven Test matches against South Africa. The current series is level at 1-1 after South Africa won the 2nd Test at the Wanderers by seven wickets.

South Africa bounced back superbly in the 2nd Test at the Wanderers to level the three-match series against India. India again batted first but Marco Jansen’s 4-31 ensured the visitors were bowled out for 202 runs.

Keegan Petersen top scored for South Africa with 62 runs while Temba Bavuma scored 51 in a 229-run total. India started well in their second innings but Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen and Lungi Ngidi took three wickets each as they dismissed India for 266 runs.

Needing 240 to win the odds were stacked in India’s favour but the Proteas batsmen for once produced the goods. Dean Elgar ended on 96 not out while there were contributions from all the other players. South Africa won the Test by seven wickets.

Mark Boucher and his selectors are likely to field the same side. They came under huge fire for selecting a spinner in the last two Test matches but at Newlands they are unlikely to go with an all pace attack.

India Form

After a brilliant display in the 1st Test, India failed to secure the series win at the Wanderers in the 2nd Test. It was a ground that India had not lost on previously so they would have been confident of securing their first ever series win in South Africa.

KL Rahul top scored with 56 runs in a 202-run total batting first. Shardul Thakul then produced a magnificent performance, taking 7-61 as the hosts could only manage 229 runs, a meager 27-run lead.

Cheteshwar Pujara scored 53 and Ajinkya Rahane 58 runs as India compiled 266 runs in the second innings. The 240-run total set for South Africa was expected to be more than enough for a win.

Unfortunately the bowling unit failed to click as South Africa ended up cruising to a seven wicket success. India only managed to take three wickets which will be a concern for the fourth innings of a Test match.

After Rahane and Pujara seemed to find some form at the Wanderers their places look secure for now. Virat Kohli will return after missing the 2nd Test, likely in the place of Hanuma Vihari.
