This should be a tight encounter between two sides not in the best of form. South Africa do however have a great record against the Windies so I’m backing the visitors to come away with a victory.

South Africa have won 6 of their last 8 Test matches against the West Indies.
South Africa’s Aiden Markram has scored 108 and 74 runs in 2 of his last 4 Test innings’.

Head to Head

South Africa have dominated against the West Indies in Test matches. Since 1992 South Africa have won 18 of their 28 Test matches while the West Indies have managed only three victories. There have been seven draws.

They last met in 2015 when South Africa beat the West Indies by eight wickets at Newlands.

West Indies Form

West Indies come into this home series with only two wins from their last eight Test matches but they are unbeaten in their last four.

Their last Test fixture took place in North Sound against Sri Lanka at the end of March 2021. The Windies scored 354 runs batting first as Kraigg Brathwaite hit 126 runs.

Kemar Roach took 3-58 as they then dismissed Sri Lanka for 258 runs. With a 96-run lead the West Indies scored a further 280 before declaring. Brathwaite again top scored with 85 runs.

On a slow pitch Sri Lanka never looked like they were in trouble. Day five ended with the visitors on 193-2 as the match finished in a dull draw.

West Indies Team News

Shai Hope has been impressive for the West Indies in limited overs cricket. He has now been called up to the Test squad. The selectors have also recalled Darren Bravo but it is still uncertain whether either will start the 1st Test.

South Africa Form

South Africa’s Test match form has been atrocious of late. They have lost eight of their last 11 matches with just three wins. The Proteas have not played Test cricket since the beginning for February 2021 when they toured Pakistan.

The 2nd Test went in Pakistan’s favour by 95 runs in Rawalpindi. Anrich Nortje took 5-56 as Pakistan batted first and scored 272 runs. South Africa responded with 201 runs, Temba Bavuma top scored on 44 runs.

Pakistan piled on 298 runs in their second innings, giving South Africa a target of 370 to win. The record chase looked on with Aiden Markram scoring 108, Rassie van der Dussen 48 and Bavuma 61. A late collapse however saw the the Proteas chances dwindle as they were eventually dismissed for 274 runs.

Former captain Faf du Plessis has retired from Test cricket. Dean Elgar takes over the captaincy reigns while it looks like Keegan Petersen make his debut in the middle order.

South Africa have struggled for runs in recent times. There will be a huge emphasis on Aidan Markram and Dean Elgar to get the team off to good starts.
