Western Province vs Sharks Preview & Tips

Western Province were very poor in their last outing while the Sharks put in a solid performance two weeks ago. I am looking at the Sharks to win by more than three points here.

  • Western Province lost their last match by 6 points.
  • Sharks have won 3 of their last 4 matches against Western Province.
  • Sharks have covered the -3 handicap in 2 of their last 3 matches.
  • Sharks beat Western Province 19-9 in the 2020 Currie Cup semi-final.

Head to Head

Western Province leads the Sharks 7-6 over their last 13 matches. They last met in the Rainbow Cup with the Stormers (Western Province) winning 25-22.

Western Province Form

Western Province currently top the Currie Cup table with seven points. They have won one and lost one of their opening two matches.

On the opening weekend Province beat a severely under-strength Bulls outfit 48-24 away from home. They were brought crashing down to earth last week as the Lions saw them off 38-32.

The scoreline does not tell the full story. With 15 minutes left to play the Lions led 38-10 but then they received two yellow cards within a minute. Western Province took full advantage of playing against 13 men as they ran in three unanswered tries.

That flurry should not detract from how poor Province were on the night. They were well beaten in every aspect of the match.

Western Province Team News

Western Province have no serious injury concerns. They could go with the same lineup that faced the Lions.

Sharks Form

The Sharks were the losing finalists in the 2020 Currie Cup and will want to go one better this season.

They got their season off to a good start by beating Griquas 30-16 in Kimberley. Last week the Durban-based outfit had a bye so they should be fresh for this fixture.

This is a repeat of the 2020 Currie Cup semi-final, a match the Sharks won 19-9 at Newlands.

Sharks Team News

After enjoying a bye last week, head coach Sean Everitt has made three changes to his starting lineup from the opening weekend.

Phepsi Buthelezi is out injured so Mpilo Gumede comes in. Curwin Bosch returns to flyhalf while Thaakir Abrahams replaces the injured Anthony Volmink on the wing.
