Wales vs Australia Preview & Tips

Neither Wales nor Australia are at their best. They have both struggled on attack in recent weeks so I expect this to be a relatively no scoring match. Home ground advantage should count in Wales’ favour. I’m backing Wales to cover the -2 handicap.

  • Wales are the 2021 Six Nations champions.
  • Australia have lost their last 2 matches.

Head to Head

Australia have won 13 of their last 15 matches against Wales. Wales’ two wins in that time has however come in the last two meetings.

When these two met at the 2019 Rugby World Cup it was Wales who won 29-25 in Tokyo.

Wales Form

Wales will be desperate for a win against Australia and make it three in a row against this opposition. The Welsh won the 2021 Six Nations campaign but their form has tapered off since then.

With a severely under-strength side, Wales drew and lost at home to Argentina in July. To begin their Autumn internationals, Wayne Pivac’s side were again without a number of first choice players as they lost 54-16 to New Zealand.

Wales came back well at full strength to narrowly lose out to South Africa before beating Fiji last weekend. Fiji played most of the game a man down but still led with 20 minutes to play.

Wales Team News

Wayne Pivac has fitness concerns over Tomas Francis, Josh Adams and Aaron Wainwright but they have all been named to start.

Australia Form

Australia’s season began terribly with three successive losses to New Zealand. Things however clicked together thereafter with five successive wins against South Africa (x2), Argentina (x2) and Japan.

Prior to the Japan match Dave Rennie lost the services of influential flyhalf, Quade Cooper and inside centre Samu Kerevi. They both opted to play for their club instead.

Their influence has clearly told as Australia have not looked the same side since. The Wallabies lost 15-13 to Scotland in their opening European game before going down 32-15 to England last week.

Defensively the Aussies did well against England but they offered little on attack. The hosts were completely dominant and only good defence and poor errors by England kept Australia in the game.

Australia Team News

In a big blow for Dave Rennie, captain Michael Hooper has been ruled out with injury. Pete Samu takes his place at flank.

In other changes, Tolu Latu, Taniela Tupou and Filipo Daugunu have all been recalled to start.
