US Open History

The US Open was launched in 1895. Played at the Newport Country Club in Newport, Rhode Island, USA, the tournament was contested by 10 professionals and a single amateur over one day. The nine-hole course was played three times by each golfer.

The US Open moved to a 72-hole tournament in 1898 and played over a number of days.

Unlike many tournaments, the US Open is played at a different course each year. Courses across the United States are known for their narrow fairways, so every US Open is a test from the tee.

Given the difficulty associated with the courses in the United States, players from the USA normally win the Major, as they have grown up playing on them. Since 1950, players from only seven other countries have won the tournament - Germany, South Africa, England, Northern Ireland, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand.
