The Wells Fargo Championship has attracted an impressive lineup of the world's elite golfers in the penultimate tournament before the PGA Championship. Who will win the sixth PGA Tour Signature Event of the season this weekend?
Wyndham Clark returns to Quail Hollow to defend his title after a four-stroke victory over Xander Schauffele in 2023.
Past and present major winners in the field include Brian Harman, Wyndham Clark, Matt Fitzpatrick, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Jason Day, Jordan Spieth, Lucas Glover, Keegan Bradley, Adam Scott, Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry, Gary Woodland, Webb Simpson, Hideki Matsuyama, and Justin Rose.
These are our four selections that could win the championship this weekend.
Wyndham Clark
Wyndham Clark had a decent start to his year, placing T29 at the Sentry and T39 at the American Express before winning the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am; however, his form dipped after that result, finishing T41 at the WM Phoenix Open and MC at the Genesis Invitational.
Clark returned to form after those two disappointing performances, placing 2nd at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and T2 at the Players Championship before finishing T31 at the Texas Children's Houston Open, MC at the Masters, and T3 at the RBC Heritage.
The world's third-ranked golfer's first two appearances at the Wells Fargo Championship yielded results of MC in 2019 and T43 in 2021 before victory in 2023.
Clark has gone close to winning for the second time on multiple occasions this year and will fancy his chances to become the first player to win this tournament back-to-back.
Max Homa
Max Homa had a solid start to his season on the PGA Tour, placing T14 at the Sentry and T13 at the Farmers Insurance Open before finishing T66 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and MC at the WM Phoenix Open.
Homa regained his touch on the greens after those performances, placing T16 at the Genesis Invitational, T8 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, T64 at the Players Championship, T25 at the Valero Texas Open, T3 at the Masters, and T55 at the RBC Heritage.
The world's tenth-ranked player has achieved great success at this tournament in his last four starts, with results of winning in 2019, MC in 2021, victory in 2022, and T8 in 2023.
Homa has a proven track record at this event and has the form to secure his third Wells Fargo Championship this weekend.
Hideki Matsuyama
Hideki Matsuyama had a decent period of play during the first two months of the 2024 PGA Tour season, finishing 58th at the Sentry, T30 at the Sony Open in Hawaii, T13 at the Farmers Insurance Open, T71 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and T22 at the WM Phoenix Open.
Matsuyama bounced back to his best soon after, with results of winning at the Genesis Invitational, T12 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, T6 at the Players Championship, T7 at the Valero Texas Open, and T38 at the Masters.
The former Masters champion has compiled a solid record at the Wells Fargo Championship, placing T38 in 2014, T20 in 2015, T11 in 2016, T76 in 2018, and T31 in 2019.
Matsuyama has been in excellent touch lately and will be challenging for the title in Charlotte this weekend.
Sepp Straka
Sepp Straka did not enjoy a very successful opening few months at the beginning of the PGA Tour season, missing the cut three times in six tournaments, with his best results being T12 at the Sentry, T26 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and T57 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
However, Straka has rediscovered the form he was exhibiting towards the end of last year, placing T16 at the Players Championship, MC at the Valspar Championship, T16 at the Masters, T5 at the RBC Heritage, and T11 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in his subsequent five starts.
The Austrian golfer has yet to make an impact at the Wells Fargo Championship, with results of MC in 2019, T54 in 2021, MC in 2022 and MC in 2023.
Straka has turned the corner after struggling with his game and is the long-shot value bet at the Quail Hollow Club.
Verdict
Homa enjoys playing at this PGA Tour event and can make the frame come Sunday.
Matsuyama is showing signs he is ready to add another trophy to his cabinet by winning in North Carolina this weekend.
Straka has found some form lately and could cause an upset victory at Quail Hollow.
