The LIV Golf Invitational Series and a world-class line-up returns to the United States for the first time this year to vie for victory at the inaugural event in Virginia. Who will walk away with the honours come Sunday?
The Robert Trent Jones Golf Club hosted the Presidents Cup in 1994, 1996, 2000, and 2005, including the 2024 Solheim Cup. The course was also the venue for the 2015 Quicken Loans National on the PGA Tour.
Current top-ten in the individual points standings after seven rounds:
1. Joaquin Niemann 125.52 pts
2. Bryson DeChambeau 105.35 pts
3. Jon Rahm 105.16 pts
4. Sergio Garcia 78 pts
5. Lucas Herbert 71.90 pts
6. Sebastian Munoz 66.05 pts
7. David Puig 60.10 pts
8. Dean Burmester 59.91 pts
9. Carlos Ortiz 58.80 pts
10. Marc Leishman 57.66 pts
These are our four selections that could win the title this weekend.
Joaquin Niemann
Joaquin Niemann was in great touch at the start of his season, placing T5 at the ISPS Handa Australian Open (DP World Tour) and T3 at the International Series in India (Asian Tour).
Niemann found another gear in the LIV Golf League after those results, registering a T33 in Riyadh, a victory in Adelaide, a T12 in Hong Kong, and a victory in Singapore.
The Chilean golf form dipped in his subsequent two tournaments, finishing T33 in Miami and T29 at the Masters before winning in Mexico City and placing T20 in South Korea and T8 at the PGA Championship.
Niemann has been in outstanding touch this season and can win the title in Virginia this weekend.
Patrick Reed
Patrick Reed was in great touch at the start of his season, placing T10 at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, T8 at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship, and T60 at the Bahrain Championship on the DP World Tour.
Reed could not maintain his level of play on his return to the LIV Golf Tour, finishing T44 in Riyadh and T37 in Adelaide in his subsequent two events.
However, Reed has rediscovered this touch lately, placing T10 in Hong Kong, T25 in Singapore, 2nd at the Invitational Series in Macau (Asian Tour), T7 in Miami, 3rd at the Masters, T17 in Mexico City, and T4 in South Korea before missing the cut at the PGA Championship.
Reed has been in ultra-consistent form lately and can lift the winning trophy at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club come Sunday.
Cameron Smith
Cameron Smith had an excellent beginning of his season on the DP World Tour, placing 2nd at the BMW Australian PGA Championship before finishing T39 at the ISPS Handa Australian Open.
Smith produced decent results on his return to the LIV Golf Tour, finishing T25 in Riyadh, 30th in Adelaide, T20 in Hong Kong, and T19 in Singapore.
Smith has improved his game in recent outings, placing T9 in Miami, MC at the Masters, T5 in Mexico City, and T7 in South Korea before missing the cut at the PGA Championship.
Smith appears to have turned the corner and can secure victory in Virginia this weekend.
Carlos Ortiz
Carlos Ortiz was in average form at the start of his season in the LIV Golf League, finishing T25 in Riyadh, T2 in Adelaide, T30 in Hong Kong, and 37th in Singapore.
Ortiz bounced back to his best after those performances with victory at the International Series in Macau (Asian Tour) before placing 4th in Miami, 16th in Mexico City, and T7 in South Korea.
Ortiz has been playing well this season and can win his second career LIV Golf League title this Sunday.
Format
An invitational field of 54 golfers will feature at the tournament, with a total purse of $25 million up for grabs. $4 million will go to the winner, while the player coming in last will pocket $50,000.
The players will contest 54 holes instead of 72 for all the LIV Golf Invitational Series events.
A shotgun start will occur, where the players will tee off simultaneously from different holes.
A 13-four-man team (four players each and two wild-card players) format will run concurrent, with the top three teams earning prize money.
Verdict
Niemann has been the stand-out player in the LIV Golf Tour this season and can win another title come Sunday.
Reed will fancy his chances to secure his first title in 2025 with a victory in Virginia.
Smith is showing signs he is ready to return to the winner's circle and should enter calculations.
Ortiz has the form to upstage the other and win at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club this weekend.
