Race 2 – Simbine (1)

Jockey: Callan Murray | Trainer: Clinton Binda

The 59kg Simbine is back from a nine-week break and will be itching to stretch his legs in his first run as a gelding. I’m expecting the bay to take an early lead and build on it through to the close to take his first win of the year. Hot on his tails to fill the podium I’m backing Caribbean Gold and Red Wave.

Race 4 – Amayah (8)

Jockey: A Domeyer | Trainer: Candice Bass

The bay filly came off a two-month break to place third and then second in her two races since 17 June. Her last race was 27 days ago so she’s hot to trot and could break the tape with time to spare. She’ll be followed by a big pack, so take your pick of Lady Veritas, Elisa Mbali and Lark’s Song to fight for second and third place.

Race 6 – Baton Rouge (1)

Jockey: Varun Jodhee | Trainer: Piet Botha

A field of 16 offers plenty of competition over the 2000m track. I like the chestnut Elegant Noble as he has placed 3-1-3 in his three races since June when he changed stables, but I fear he might lose his legs in the final stretch. The smart money is backing Baton Rouge, and I’d add King’s Quest and Ahead of the Facts to follow through the tape.

Race 8 – Rattlesnake (9)

Jockey: A Domeyer | Trainer: Candice Bass

Kaalvoet won his first race back in April, followed by a third place 11 days later, and then a seventh place. He’s a good bet at 6.00, but race favourite Rattlesnake comes into the race on the back of a win in August at Kenilworth and second place at Durbanville at the start of September. That was off a 101 day break, so with almost a month’s rest he’s going to be a handful once the gates crank open. Expect Marketa (7.00) to push him hard at the finish, with Demanding Dave and Heritage Ridge jostling for third place.
