Smart Choice is the runaway favourite in Race 1.
Tulip Fields is a strong runner with the legs to take Race 4.
The Marquee is low on the rankings but high on energy for Race 8.
Phutulicious is fresh and firing to romp home in Race 9.

Race 1 – Smart Choice (2)

Jockey: Tristan Godden. Trainer: Michael Miller

The Maiden Juvenile Plate sees 7 runners break the gate, but Smart Choice is the pick to take the tape. No Drama is high on the odds listing, but Smart Choice looks strong to win this by a length.

Smart Choice is the only horse with more than 3 runs under the 3-yr-old bay filly’s belt. Her last run saw her finish 9th out of 16, but her previous 3 runs saw her place 3-4-2, so in this inexperienced field she looks the one to back.

Race 4 – Tulip Fields (1)

Jockey: Craig Zackey. Trainer: Dean Kannemeyer

Ubukhwebezana, Amelia's Legacy and That's My Baby look like a strong pack, but they are likely to be trailing in the wake of Tulip Fields. It’s a field filled with winners, such as Ubukhwebezana, who has 3 wins in her last 5 outings and 6 total career wins, but has been inconsistent in her last 3 runs.

Tulip Fields gets my vote though, with trainer Dean Kannemeyer managing her workload carefully to guide her to two wins, a 2nd place and a 3rd in the 6 runs in her 9-month career.

Race 8 – The Marquee (2)

Jockey: Serino Moodley. Trainer: Willem Nel

A bumper field of 14 runners takes us through the day’s second-last race that looks like a ding-dong battle between Fostinovo, Grand Appeal, Winter Waves and The Marquee. In a field packed with recent winners, two runners stand out for me. Fostinovo is the obvious choice as the runaway favourite at 3.00 after recent runs of 2-1-2-1-2. The next best runner is pegged at 8.00 (the somewhat inconsistent Cowboy Country), but I Iike the legs of The Marquee.

The 4-yr-old bay gelding has been resting up for 54 days and has a strong race record of 2-4-1-2-6. His last finish was 6th place at Scottsville in a 1200m sprint on 15 Feb, but he came out of the gates poorly and got stuck behind a pack of horses. To his credit he pushed hard to come close to the leader in what ended up as a tight race.

With the experienced Serino Moodley on his back again I’m confident they will steer clear of the pack to use his legs to take the tape.

Race 9 – Phutulicious (1)

Jockey: S Veale. Trainer: Alyson Wright

With 7 runners all making a strong claim for the win, this looks like one that Phutulicious is likely to own. Running on the inside track in a 13-strong field with just one other 1st place finish in their combined last 5 runs, Phutulicious is the most consistent runner and gets my backing.

One Irish Rover has placed 3-2-2 in his last 3 runs and Acacia’s Blossom had a string of 2-2-2 finishes but they were sandwiched between two 5th place finishes. Lunch Monkey (4-5-6-4) is currently 2nd on the odds, but the bookies favourite remains Phutulicious. The 6-yr-old bay gelding has been in training for 51 days after a burst of 1-2-3-2 finishes. He has 3 career wins and 3 2nd places in just 21 starts and looks fit and firing to end the day’s racing with a signature win.
