Race 2 – Golden Angel (5)

Jockey: Damyan Pillay | Trainer: G. S. Kotzen

A 12-strong field includes some strong competition from Amafort (3-6-3-2-2) as well as Futana, who won her 2nd-last race. The strong favourite to take the tape is Golden Angel, the 4-yr-old bay filly, who has two wins in the last 14 months. In her last 12 races she has placed 1st once, 3rd twice, 4th five times and 5th twice, so she is consistently up with the pace-setters.

Race 4 – Continentalexpress (3)

Jockey: Keagan De Melo | Trainer: Dean Kannemeyer

Chill in the Air is the hot favourite in Race 4, but I can’t overlook Continentalexpress, who has run 1-1-2-8-2. In his last race the 5-yr-old bay gelding chased down Gardener’s Pride after an early breakaway, refusing to give up and just failing to haul in the winner at the post. Rodriguez is another strong runner who is on a hot streak (2-3-4-1-2).

Race 6 – Miss Munroe (8)

Jockey: Callan Murray | Trainer: Marthinus Nicolas Prinsloo

Crafty Crofty has placed 1-2-3 in her last four race and should be pushing for the tape. Call Me Jane placed 1-3-1 after a 99-day break and will also be in the frame for what could be a photo-finish. Strong though these two fillies are, I’m backing Miss Munroe, the 4-yr-old bay filly who won her last two races. She’s been enjoying a 56-day rest so should have plenty in the legs to take out her two big challengers.

Race 8 – Professor Lupin (4)

Jockey: A Mgudlwa | Trainer: Alyson Wright

One-Armed Bandit, The Mask and Professor Lupin have all won in their last two races, but for me the winner looks more like the Prof! The 5-yr-old grey gelding has run 2-3-1 in his last three bursts out the gate and is clearly hungry or the line after not missing a race in seven months.

Verdict

Greyville Racecourse, Durban

Golden Angel to take it with ease in Race 2, and Miss Munroe set to make it a hat-trick of wins after a healthy break.
