Race 2 – Nkwenkwezi (6)


Jockey: M Yeni | Trainer: C. Binda
A six-horse field looks like a packed photo-finish with some high performers lining up for the ribbon, but Nkwenkwezi has to be the favourite. The 4-yr-old bay filly has won her last three races on the bounce after six 2nd place finishes and two 3rd places this year. 

Race 4 – Inspector James (1)


Jockey: Muzi Yeni | Trainer: J. J. van Vuuren
Trainer Clinton Binda had entered five horses in this race, although Mystical Butterfly is a late scratching. It’s not likely to be Binda’s day, as Inspector James has the best credentials in what is an inexperienced field with only a handful of places among them, while the Inspector has finished 5-4-2-2.

Race 6 – Sigrid Swing (3)


Jockey: Calvin Habib | Trainer: Heinrich Westhuizen
This has the makings of a three-way tie between Duchess of Paloma, Ethical and Sigrid Swing. The first two have both run 5-3-2-1-1, while Sigrid Swing is on a four-race run of second places. I’m backing the oldest of the three, the 5-yr-old bay mare Sigrid Swing, to turn her hunger for a win to convert those 2nd place finishes into wins. But it’s sure to be close however it pans out.  

Race 9 – Stokesy (1)


Jockey: Callan Murray | Trainer: M/M de Kock
A packed field of 13 offers the promise of upsets aplenty in the final race of the day, but for my money it has to be Stokesy, the 3-yr-old chestnut colt. Stokesy is likely to be more competitive over the shorter distance (1500m), and his three-race career has seen him place 6-3-4. There are no recent winners in the field and just three second places, so this has the makings of a maiden win for the bright young thing.

Verdict

Nkwenkwezi to nip through a tight field for a photo-finish win, while Sigrid Swing is on to steal it by a whisker.
