2023 Monaco Grand Prix Preview
The 2022 Monaco Grand Prix certainly was full of twists and turns starting with a red flag in Q3 which saw the Ferrari’s lock out the first row of the grid with Charles Leclerc taking pole in his home race.
There were also plenty of curve balls in Sunday’s main event with all teams starting on wets and changing over to slicks with almost a third of the race completed.
This being the point where Ferrari and Leclerc handed the race to Sergio Perez after being the only top-runner changing to intermediates first forcing a double stop for the Monegasque.
The Monaco GP may be the best and only chance for any other team besides Red Bull to win a race in 2023 with top speed not being a deciding factor, an area where Christian Horner's team have dominated the field in 2023.
Qualifying in Monaco is more important than any other race with the risk of an overtaking manoeuvre being too high for those with championship points to lose. Pit strategy will also play its part as it always does in Monaco, so we can expect the engineers to be working overtime.
Monaco GP Qualifying Best Bet
Charles Leclerc has taken pole position the previous two years in Monaco, although Max Verstappen was red flagged on his flyer last year after a crash from teammate Sergio Perez.
I predict that Charles Leclerc will take his third pole in as many years, making sure that he puts in his best lap in his first run in Q3, so nothing unfortunate happens later in the session.
We can also expect Fernando Alonso to have something up his sleeve in Monaco, knowing that it may be his only chance to win a race in 2023, he will need to be on the front two rows if he has any chance in the race.
Miami GP Best Bet
The Red Bulls are the Red Bulls and if I’m going to bet against them at any race in 2023 it is when pace around slow speed corners is an advantage and that is where the Ferrari has the upper-hand against the Austrian team.
With no car having the chance to reach much over 300km/hr, the tight street circuit also negates a large advantage that Verstappen and Perez have over the rest of the field.
I’m going to take the roughie here and back Charles Leclerc to win for the first time at his home grand prix.
I also think that Alonso is a chance, if he can get out in front at any stage throughout the race he will put his elbows out making it impossible for any driver to make a pass, so I’m backing him for at least a podium finish.
Verdict
I’m backing Ferrari and Charles Leclerc to get it right this time in Monaco after taking pole and being so close the previous two years. Alonso will be in the mix as usual so another podium from him can be expected.
