Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid

Barca are in superb form, winning 8 of their last 9 matches (1 draw) with 4 clean sheets and 27 goals. Their form at home is magnificent, winning their last 20 matches in a row, including a 3-2 win over Real Madrid and wins over Atletico Madrid in La Liga (3-1) and in the Copa del Rey (3-0).

Barca have lost just once at home this season, a 2-1 defeat which came against a powerful PSG outfit.

Atletico have had an easy run in the Champions League, but they produced some excellent football in the Round of 16 to beat Spurs 5-2 at home before slipping to a 3-2 away defeat, which was enough to secure a 7-5 aggregate win.

On the road Atletico has lost their last 3 matches, shipping 3 goals in each of those outings with a 9-4 combined scoreline. They’ve won just 2 of their last 9 away matches. They also haven’t won away in the Champions League since December, so it sounds like they’re in for a pounding from Barca.

The visitors have conceded 3 goals in 5 of their last 6 matches on the road, so this should be a goal fest for the home side. Barca have scored 2-plus goals in 18 of their last 19 home matches, with 66 goals in that stretch - an average of 3.5 goals per match, so it makes sense to back a comfortable Barca win with 3-plus goals for the home side.

PSG vs Liverpool

Liverpool are limping into this clash on the back of losing 2-1 away to Brighton followed by a 4-0 away thumping at the hands of Man City. They’ve also lost 4 of their last 7, with just 2 wins.

PSG are a force to be reckoned with: they are leading Ligue 1 by 4 points with a match in hand and have won their last 4 matches on the bounce, including an 8-2 aggregate win over Chelsea. It’s not looking strong for Liverpool in the first leg.

Liverpool’s away form isn’t strong, losing 4 and winning 1 of their last 5 matches on the road, with the victory coming in the form of a 3-1 result over bottom-of-the-Premier League Wolves in the FA Cup a week after losing away to the same side in the League. They lost their last 3 away matches by a combined scoreline of 7-1, so their attacking force is struggling as much as their defence.

PSG have won 11 of their last 15 matches at home, keeping 5 clean sheets and conceding just 17 goals while scoring 44 times. They have won 5 of their last 8 matches at home with a goal tally of 23-9, scoring 3 or more goals in 5 of their last home matches, which is a staggering statistic.

I’m backing PSG to travel to Anfield for the second leg with a cushion of 2+ goals in the bank. Liverpool have scored just once in their last 3 matches on the road, but PSG have conceded 8 goals in their last 4 matches at home. With Liverpool’s last chance of silverware being in the Champions League, the Reds are sure to throw everything at PSG and should knock in a goal or two despite being on the losing side.

Verdict

UEFA Champions League

Barcelona to batter the Atletico Madrid goal, while PSG to knock a few past battling Liverpool.
