Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka Asian Games 3rd Place Playoff Predictions - Bangladesh backed to bounce back for bronze

Editor
Last updated: 30 minutes ago

Bangladesh take on Sri Lanka in a highly anticipated T20I clash, coming in with superior recent head-to-head form (three wins in the last five T20I meetings) and a competitive semi-final showing. Key Bangladeshi players to watch include Towhid Hridoy and Rishad Hossain, while Sri Lanka will rely on Nuwanidu Fernando and Sahan Arachchige to step up, especially after a heavy defeat against India. With the pitch slightly favouring teams that bat first, Bangladesh are the strong favourites to claim victory and secure a morale-boosting win.

Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka Predictions

Bangladesh arrive with the stronger recent head-to-head record and were considerably more competitive in their semi-final defeat than Sri Lanka.
  • Bangladesh’s Towhid Hridoy has scored 274 runs in his last 10 matches.
  • Bangladesh’s Tanzid Hasan has accumulated 273 runs at an average of 34.13.
  • Bangladesh’s Rishad Hossain has taken 13 wickets in his last nine matches.
  • Sri Lanka’s Nuwanidu Fernando scored 117* & 50 in his last 5 innings.
  • Sri Lanka’s Sahan Arachchige has taken 2/11, 2/44 & 2/28 in his last 4 matches.
  • Sri Lanka’s Tharindu Ratnayake claimed 2/32 in the semi-final against India.

Head-to-Head

Bangladesh have won three and lost two of their last five T20I meetings with Sri Lanka. Their most recent encounter was on 20 September last year when Bangladesh chased down Sri Lanka’s 168/7 to win by four wickets with one ball remaining.

Bangladesh Form

Bangladesh’s first completed match of the tournament ended in a six-wicket semi-final defeat to Pakistan. After slipping to 21/3 Towhid Hridoy struck 42 from 25 balls to help Bangladesh recover to 111/7 in the rain-reduced 13-over contest.

Bangladesh then reduced Pakistan to 53/4 with Mahedi Hasan, Nasum Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman and Rishad Hossain taking one wicket apiece. Pakistan recovered to complete the chase with nine balls in hand.

Sri Lanka Form

Sri Lanka suffered a heavy 124-run defeat to India in their first completed match of the Games. Sahan Arachchige took 2/28 and Tharindu Ratnayake returned 2/32 as India reached 169/7.

The batting response collapsed dramatically, with Sri Lanka reduced to 18/5 inside four overs before being dismissed for only 45 in 9.5 overs. They will need a major improvement with the bat to challenge for bronze.

Team News

Korogi Sports Park has slightly favoured teams batting first, with 10 wins from 17 T20s with an average first-innings score of 135.

Bangladesh (possible XI): Saif Hassan, Tanzid Hasan, Litton Das (c & wk), Parvez Hossain Emon, Towhid Hridoy, Mosaddek Hossain, Rishad Hossain, Mahedi Hasan, Nasum Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam.

Sri Lanka (possible XI): Sineth Jayawardena, Lasith Croospulle, Sohan de Livera (wk), Nuwanidu Fernando, Sahan Arachchige (c), Ashen Bandara, Chamika Karunaratne, Wanuja Sahan, Tharindu Ratnayake, Vijayakanth Viyaskanth, Binura Fernando.

Verdict

Bangladesh are strongly tipped to win after picking up wins in three of their last five T20Is against Sri Lanka.

Towhid Hridoy and Rishad Hossain are backed to play key roles for Bangladesh, while Nuwanidu Fernando and Sahan Arachchige look important for Sri Lanka.
