Indian Premier League History

The Indian Premier League, known around the world as simply 'IPL', is India's professional Twenty20 cricket league.

The tournament is hugely popular around the world, while nearly every match is a sellout. In 2014, the IPL ranked as the sixth most attended sporting league in the world.

The league came into being in 2008. All but one season has been played in India, with the 2009 campaign being moved to South Africa due to security fears in India.

An auction is held ahead of each edition, with the world’s top cricketers up for grabs. Australia's Pat Cummins is the most expensive foreigner ever bought at an IPL auction. He broke the record ahead of the 2020 league by going for a whopping $10,882,195 to the Kolkata Knight Riders.

2026 will see the 19th edition of the competition take place, with the Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians sharing the honour of being the most successful sides to date, with each side having secured five titles.
