Race 3 – Quest of Valor (2)

The Maiden Plate at 1:15pm has had 4 runners pulled from the original field of 12. Quest of Valor looks primed to run away with this one, possibly by a handful of lengths.

The bookmakers have the 3-yr-old bay gelding as the firm favourite to take the tape in this novice field with only 2 other 2nd-place finishers in the field. Quest placed 3rd in his debut race, claiming a 2nd place finish in only his second race just 27 days ago.

Race 5 – Touched By Angels (6)

We’re in for an epic battle between Touched By Angels and Rollo The Viking. Rollo won back-to-back races before slipping to a 3rd and 6th place finish in his last 2 outings.

Touched has run 3-1-2-1-3-7-2 since October, and aside from that 2nd-last spot at the end of January he has proven himself a reliable runner.

Not to be ignored are Forward Motion and Golden Rule, who are also strong finishers, both with back-to-back wins in their last 4 runs.

Race 7 – Circumbendibus (5)

Jockey: Sifisokuhle Bungane

Trainer: Glen Kotzen

It’s "lucky number 7" runners in the third last race of the day, with Circumbendibus the strong fave. Position of Power (2-1-7-3-1) has been pulled from the race, leaving Circumbendibus the hot ticket to take the tape.

Donquerari is a strong competitor with a streak of 2-2-3 placings in his last 5 runs, but those finishes came either side of two 8th placings, so his legs lack consistency.

Circumbendibus is a 5-yr-old bay gelding who last ran 23 days ago and has 5 wins, 5 second-placings and 3 thirds under his saddle. He’s also been on something of a heater, finishing 1-3-5-1-1 before a change of ownership brought him finishes of 2-5-4-1. Hot to trot!

Race 9 – Red Cardinal (8)

Trainer: Wendy Whitehead

The race day ends with a reduced field of 8 runners that’s offering up the potential for a tasty three-way finish. Hard to choose.

Gallic Victor is the overwhelming favourite at odds of 1.80 (last 5 runs 1-2-5-5-3) with Next of Kin also ranked high at 5.50 (1-8-5-4-3). I’m backing a heavy payout with Red Cardinal pegged at 13.00, largely as the 4-yr-old bay gelding has been off the course for 48 days.

Red Cardinal has had a superb 9 months at the track, following up 2 seventh-place finishes with a 54-day break which brought a better streak of 3-5-3 finishes. A further 54-day break brought a 2nd place finish followed by a win, so with 48 days with his hooves up I’m backing this lad to take the tape.
