Race 1 – Raffish Trend (7)
Jockey: Craig Zackey | Trainer: Adam Marcus
A monster field of 17 has the potential for a tight finish between Raffish Trend, Gimme the Power and Meghan’s Diamond. I’m backing Raffish Trend, the 4-yr-old bay filly whose first run was in June last year, placing 9th out of 15 before a 128-day break. She bounced back with three strong performances, finishing 4th, 3rd and 6th, the latter being a tight finish after a storming race.
Race 3 – Rare Earth (3)
Jockey: C Orffer | Trainer: Piet / Steyn
Another tight race is in store for this 13-strong field, with three horses pushing for the line. I’m going for Rare Earth, who has three second-place finishes in her last six runs. A pair of seconds in July and September (a 61-day break splitting the two silver finishes) was followed by another second-place finish three races later in early December before a fourth-place run on Christmas eve.
Race 6 – The Night Ferry (2)
Jockey: Rene Piechulek | Trainer: Herman Brown
In a strong field of winners, the inexperienced Kliptown won his last race, Lovers Lane has finished 4-2-2-5, while Typically French (85197) and Act of Grace (16247) have shown strong form. However, I like the strength of The Night Ferry, the 6-yr-old bay gelding who won in an 11-strong field back in July last year, adding a third place and a fourth place finish before ending the year with a pair of second-place finishes after two strong closing sprints.
Race 8 – Eisteddford (4)
Jockey: Craig Zackey | Trainer: Greg Ennion
The last race of the day looks like it will go down to the wire, with a field packed with winners. Eisteddford won in September from a 14-strong field three weeks after placing second. The 4-yr-old bay filly ran a strong race at Kenilworth on the fourth of January but fell off the pace near the end, but she looks full of running.
Verdict
Raffish Trend and Rare Earth to nose it in tight finishes, The Night Ferry to storm home in race 6, while Eisteddford to snatch a late win at the end of the day,
