Race 1 – Flying Fate (3)

Jockey: K De Melo

The race day starts with a late-afternoon Maiden Plate that is set up for Flying Fate to clip through for a win ahead of a strong challenge from Siyabambelela.

The 4-yr-old bay filly started her career with a 2nd place finish in her debut 18 days ago when she pipped Siyabambelela for 2nd place. Siyabambelela has run 3-5-3-3 in her last four runs and was challenging for the win in that last race, but she lacked the pace at the end, allowing the fresher Flying Fate to slip in to snatch the 2nd place spot.

Race 3 – Sesame (4)

Jockey: Callan Murray

Trainer: G. S. Kotzen

This looks like a cracker with half of the 8-horse field likely to challenge for the tape. There’s little to choose between Sesame, Master Du Rouvray, High Queue and The Wolf.

High Queue has been consistent, with 2-2-4-3-2 finishes in his last five starts, but he ran 11 days ago. Master Du Rouvray is also in great form, with 1-4-2-1-2-3 finishes in his last 6, with a last run 18 days ago.

Sesame is the bookies’ favourite, despite a recent blip. The 5-yr-old bay filly has run 4-3-2-1-6-1 and has had her hooves up for 25 days, so she’s fresh, in form and an obvious pick as race winner.

Race 5 – Green Mile (4)

Jockey: Serino Moodley

Trainer: W. A. Nel

The bookies’ top two are My Lucky Charm (6-4-9-5-5) and Rafiki (7-2-2-3-8), and they usually know their oats. Rafiki has had plenty of breaks yet finished 8th last time out, while My Lucky Charm hasn’t hit the podium since October last year.

Green Mile has had a 78-day break and should be fresh and firing to hit the tape. The 6-yr-old bay gelding has been run very light and has been well handled by jockey Serino Moodley, who has run him 2-3-2-3-5-3-6-2-3-1, before a stand-in jockey took him to 5th place on 14 January.

I’m backing the Moodley/Green Mile combo to hit the mirror first in this race.

Race 8 – Magical Sky (1)

Jockey: Keagan De Melo

Trainer: Alyson Wright

We end the day with a strong field, but it’s unlikely to challenge Magical Sky. Catch a Penny (1-4-4-4-2) has been a consistent runner, but Magical Sky is the horse for me, and with good odds currently sitting at 4.00.

The 4-yr-old chestnut filly has three career wins, two coming in her last three outings. She went through a poor four-race streak of 7-6-6-9 before powering through in her last five races to finish 4-3-1-2-1.

She’s had 25 days away from the race track so between her freshness, form and nice odds she’s the one that I want to back.

Flying Fate to snag her first win in the Maiden Plate, with wins for Sesame, Green Mile and Magical Sky through the evening.
