Race 2 – Iona Castle (1)

None of the eight runners have a win in their last five races, but the two form horses are Iona Castle (3-3-2-2-3) and Swift Serenity (12-2-5-3-2).

Swift Serenity has had an uptick in fortune since a change in ownership and is running strong, but I fancy Iona Castle to pip her to the post. Both are 4-yr-old fillies, but Iona Castle has been on a hot streak since debuting with a 4th place in October last year.

She hasn’t finished outside the top three since then, with three 3rd places and two 2nd place finishes, so I fancy her to take the tape ahead of Swift Serenity, with the rest of the runners probably a length or two back.

Race 4 – Lark’s Song (5)

Lark’s Song debuted with a 5th place followed by an 8th before a 73-day break. The 4-yr-old bay filly came back with a new lease on life, claiming a 3rd place followed by a maiden win in a field of 11.

She finished 2nd in her next race a month later and has had a 45-day break, so she should be ready to ride hard and fast. Pentolina is the next favourite with the bookies having finished 3rd and 2nd in her last two races.

Race 6 – Country Time (5)

Galactus won his last race, but the 5-yr-old bay gelding finished outside the top 3 in his previous 4 runs, with two double-digital finishes, so he seems to lack consistency.

Country Time has my backing in this race, as the 7-yr-old bay mare has five wins to her credit from 41 races. She’s coming into this race on the back of a healthy 45-day break after finishing 3-5-2-1, a run which was fuelled by a 56-day break after snatching two wins in three. She looks hot to trot and good to back.

Race 8 – Whirlwind (3)

Trainer: J. Crawford

The race day ends with the 10-field Hollywoodbets Bright Future Class 4 with a purse of R110 000 up for grabs. Whirlwind, October Fest and Peace of Mind are the three top contenders for the tape, but based on the form book Whirlwind is the hands-down favourite.

The 4-yr-old bay filly kicked off her career with a 3rd place finish last September before taking a 101-day break. Since then she has been in storming form, claiming a win in her next run followed by 2nd place, another win and a 3rd place finish 37 days ago. She’s a quality runner who should eat the field for breakfast.

Verdict

A first win for Iona Castle, while Lark’s Song to claim a second win in three runs.

Country Time to claim a 6th career win, while Whirlwind to storm away with the final race of the day.
