Bulls Route to Currie Cup Final

The Bulls began their 2021 Currie Cup campaign with a 22-20 victory over arch-rivals, Western Province at Newlands. This was an early test of character with the Bulls down on the scoreboard and playing with a man less after a red card. A last minute try sent Jake White’s side into euphoria on enemy territory.

Their next match was at home to the defending Currie Cup champions, the Free State Cheetahs. The Cheetahs had narrowly beaten the Bulls in Super Rugby Unlocked but the Bulls were too strong this time, winning 40-13.

Thereafter the Bulls suffered their first defeat of the Currie Cup, losing 32-29 to the Sharks in Durban. It was a very tight contest and one which the Bulls should have drawn, but for a last minute penalty miss.

COVID-19 struck the Pretoria-based outfit after that defeat. It was three weeks before they played again, this time beating the Lions 22-15 at Loftus. That meant the Bulls were secure of top spot and a home semi-final so Jake White sent an under-21 side to face the Pumas in their last match. The Bulls lost 44-14.

In the semi-final the Bulls were by far the superior team, beating the Lions 26-21. The scoreline hardly told the true story as the Bulls were utterly dominant.

Sharks Route to Currie Cup final

The Sharks got their Currie Cup campaign underway with a convincing 45-10 home win over the Pumas. Their superb start continued, beating the Bulls 32-29 at home in their second match.

Then the Sharks hit a bit of a dip in form. They suffered to heavy defeats, first 27-12 at the Lions and then 37-10 at the Cheetahs. Those results put the Sharks place in the semi-final in jeopardy.

But, on the final weekend of action, the Sharks were clinical, thrashing Griquas 47-19 in Durban.

The Sharks semi-final victory over Western Province at Newlands will not be a match fondly remembered by rugby supporters. Both teams produced poor displays, but the Sharks pulled through 19-9.
