  • Leinster has won 20 of their 23 matches this season and remains unbeaten at home.
  • Northampton enters the match on a four-game winning streak despite a challenging season.
  • Leinster has reached the Champions Cup final three consecutive times but fallen short each time.

Leinster vs Northampton Predictions

Leinster are huge favourites for this clash and rightly so. They have won 20 of 23 games this season and are unbeaten at home. However, the Saints have won their last four, so I’m backing them to get within the 21.5 handicap.

  • Leinster have won 20 of their 23 matches this season.

  • Northampton have won their last 4 matches.
  • Northampton lost their last match to Leinster by 3 points.

Head to Head

In last season’s Champions Cup semi-final, the same two sides met with Leinster winning 20-17.

Leinster Form

Leinster have been in superb form all season across both the Champions Cup and URC. They are clear favourites to win the European competition this year.

That said, the last few years have seen Leinster favourites but fail to win the tournament, losing in the final three times in a row. Last weekend, in the URC, Leinster rested a host of their top players and lost 35-22 at Scarlets in the URC.

Prior to that, the Irish Giants defeated Ulster in the URC. In their last 16 and quarter-final matches of the Champions Cup, Leinster thrashed Harlequins 62-0 and Glasgow 52-0.

Leinster Injuries & Team News

James Ryan will unfortunately not make the game due to injury. However, Ryan Baird looks to be fit enough and RG Snyman is also back from injury.

Northampton Form

Northampton have not had a very good season after winning the Rugby Premiership last season. They have struggled to maintain their consistency in the Premiership, although, in the Champions Cup they’ve been a threat.

While their form hasn’t been good over the season, the Saints do come into this semi-final off the back of a four-match winning streak. They beat Clermont in the last 16 of the Champions Cup and saw off Castres in the quarters.

In the Rugby Premiership, the Saints managed a one-point win at Newcastle before beating Bristol 48-31 this past weekend.

Northampton Injuries & Team News

Northampton may have struggled domestically this season, but they have plenty of internationals to fall back on. All eyes will be on the half-back pairing of Alex Mitchell and Finn Smith, while Tommy Freeman is dangerous out wide.

Verdict

Northampton have won their last four matches, so should be confident. I am backing them in the +21.5 handicap.
