Australia vs Argentina Predictions - Argentina to get close against Wallabies

Australia mounted a stirring second-half comeback to defeat Argentina 28-24 last weekend, relying on late heroics for the win. Despite Australia's strong recent form, questions remain about their ability to control matches from the outset. Argentina, who dominated early but faltered late, will need improved game management to stay in the Rugby Championship race. With both teams having injury concerns but confirming squads on Thursday, the expectation is for Argentina to challenge strongly and possibly cover the +5.5 handicap, making this a closely contested fixture.

Australia vs Argentina Predictions

Australia mounted a spirited fightback last week to secure a last-minute win which was the second time in their last three matches the Wallabies required a second half effort to pull off the win. I am leaning towards Argentina this weekend to get within the +5.5 handicap.

Head to Head

Australia beat Argentina 28-24 last weekend. Argentina have won three of their last five encounters.

Australia Form

For the first time in many years Australia are looking at a series challenge for the Rugby Championship title. Given their form this season, many fancy them to challenge for the Bledisloe Cup as well.

However, despite the fantastic form this season against the British & Irish Lions, South Africa and Argentina, the Wallabies are far from the complete project. There have certainly been moments of fortunate, particularly last week where they were outplayed comprehensively for large periods.

It took a brave call with the draw on offer last Saturday as Harry Wilson decided to opt for a lineout and go for the win. But it turned out to be the correct call.

However, given how the game went, Australia will still have plenty of concerns ahead of this Saturday. Both their wins against South Africa and Argentina have relied on big second half comebacks, that isn’t sustainable in the long term.

Joe Schmidt will certainly be looking at his side to make a better start this weekend. The first half will play a key role as the Argentines may not be so generous this time around in the second 40.

Australia Team News

Australia are unlikely to make too many changes from their side that won last weekend. Injuries may change that but their team will be confirmed on Thursday.

Argentina Form

Argentina will be very disappointed with the result from last week after taking a substantial lead into the half time break. This week it is a must-win for Los Pumas if they are to stay within touch of the Rugby Championship title for the first time ever.

Los Pumas made a superb start last weekend, dominating huge periods of the first half. However, the option to turn down the three points on the hooter at half time came back to bite them in the end.

Australia scored in the last minute to secure the victory, but Los Pumas, despite disappointment, will know they have more than enough quality to bounce back with a win this Saturday.

They did the same after losing at home to the All Blacks in round one, winning the second match and victory here will keep them in touch of top spot.

What will be required is another strong start but if they do get into the lead during the second half, they will need to have much better game management and discipline, as that was lacking last weekend.

Argentina Team News

Argentina, like the hosts, will confirm their team for Thursday.

Verdict

Argentina are backed to get within the 5.5 handicap and perhaps upset the odds with a win.
