Super Rugby Round 7 Odds & Form

Moana Pasifika vs Highlanders

Team
Form
Moana PasifikaLLLLL
HighlandersLLWLL

The Highlanders have won two matches, one on the opening weekend against the Crusaders and again in round four against the Western Force. Moana on the other hand won in round one but have lost five successive games since.

Easybets currently has the Highlanders as clear favourites with odds of 1.12 to win while Moana are priced at 6.20 to upset the odds. The handicap is currently at 15.5 and pays 1.84 both ways. Another interesting market may be the total match points given how many points both sides have conceded in recent weeks.

As of 24 March, the match points are set at over/under 64.5 and pays 1.85. Given the form of the two sides, this may be the most reliable market as a high scoring game is certainly expected.

Brumbies vs Waratahs

Team
Form
BrumbiesWWLLW
WaratahsWWLLL

The Brumbies made a superb start to their season, winning their opening two games, which included them beating the Crusaders away from home and scoring 50 points. Two defeats followed but last week the Canberra outfit bounced back to beat the Chiefs at home.

The Waratahs also started their season well with two victories, both at home, but have lost their subsequent three. Home form has always been the Tahs' strength but their away from has been woeful since last season.

Given how strong the Brumbies are at home, they are priced at 1.23 to win while the Tahs' pay 4.10 for an unlikely Canberra victory. The handicap of 11.5 may garner some interest from bettors, certainly in favour of the Brumbies while the total match points is set at 57.5. Under that would be my early bet give the strength of the Brumbies defence and their inconsistent attack.

Hurricanes vs Reds

Team
Form
HurricanesWLWWW
RedsLWWWW

These two sides have identical records thus far of played five, won four, lost one. The Canes are two points clear of the Reds because of bonus points accrued. The Reds only defeat came in the opening round in Sydney against the Waratahs while the Hurricanes lost in round two against Fijian Drua, also away from home.

However, the Hurricanes have scored 50+ points in three of their five games to date while the Reds victories have been by much smaller margins. While a tight contest could have been expected in Australia - in Wellington I suspect the Hurricanes will have too much.

The Canes are favourites at 1.15 while the Reds are priced at 5.20 to win. The handicap is set at 13.5 points, something I am leaning toward the Hurricanes to cover. The bookies expect some points here with total match points set at 59.5.

Blues vs Fijian Drua

Team
Form
BluesWLWWW
Fijian DruaLLWWL

Fijian Drua are very much a home side, although they have lost twice there as well. However, the did defeat the Hurricanes and Brumbies on home soil. The Blues lost in round one but have won four of their five games since.

Given Drua's away record this season and historically, they are not being given much of a chance and it reflects in the odds. The Blues are paying 1.05 while Drua are valued at 8.80 for an away win. The handicap is set at 20.5 which may be tempting.

Given the attacking intent of both sides, particularly Fijian Drua's, the total match points of over 57.5 looks a great option.

Western Force vs Chiefs

Team
Form
Western ForceLLWLL
ChiefsWWLWL

The Chiefs are the tournament favourites but have made an inconsistent start, losing at home to the Crusaders in round three and again to the Brumbies away in round six. However, they will fancy their chances in Perth against a plucky Force side.

Western Force have managed just one victory against Moana all season. However, in the last two weeks, they have put in two big performances away to the Highlanders and Hurricanes - losing both games by eight points. A return home will be welcome.

Despite the good performances of the Western Force, they are still huge underdogs at home with odds of 5.00 while the Chiefs are priced at 1.16. The handicap of 14.5 could be interesting given the Force's form, and I feel they could get much closer than that.

The total points for the game is set at 63.5 which is again tempting as the Force can be tough to break down at home. Unders/overs will pay 1.86 in that market.

Verdict

I have chosen four of the five games to hang my hat on this weekend. For now, I am not confident on the opening game. As the week progresses and squads are announced, things could shift, but often the best value is found early in the week.
