Race 5 – Avernian Goddess (6)

Golden Pavilion has a great recent record, placing 1-1-3-1-7 in his last five races, but the 6-yr-old finished last in his most recent race, which came after a 59-day break, so I’m not overly confident about his legs or stamina, although he knows how to win.

The smart money is on Avernian Goddess and Speed Racer. The latter came 2nd and 1st in his last two runs, but that was preceded by 6-8-10-4 finishes and he hasn’t runs for 16 days, so his 6-yr-old legs might be wobblier rather than fresh.

I’m backing the slightly younger Avernian Goddess, who has run three months in a row, finishing 1-3-2, and was in action 14 days ago. Since 2024 he’s had three wins, four 2nd places and three 3rd-place finishes, so that sounds like the stronger bet in what should be a tight finish between the three experienced runners.

Race 6 – Wishes and Dreams (2)

Jockey: Richard Fourie | Trainer: Alan Greeff

A field of eight looks no match for Wishes and Dreams, although Haze and Smoke has run 5-1-10-4-1 and should challenge hard. Wishes and Dreams has had a very easy schedule, having not run for 80 days. The 4-yr-old bay filly has finished 2-1-1-2 in her last four races, and has run just five times since May 2025, so she should be fresh and feisty.

Race 7 – Izanami (2)

Jockey: Richard Fourie | Trainer: Alan Greeff

A fat field of 14 runners is likely to fail to keep up with a fab four of Izanami, City of Dreams, Pomerol and Penny’s World. Izanami is one of just three horses to have won in their last five runs, the 5-yr-old bay filly running 2-5-1-3 in her last four races since a 204-day break. She last ran 17 days ago, and her last win was carrying Richard Fourie, who is back on her reins for this race.

Race 8 – Canford Queen (9)

Jockey: Andrew Fortune | Trainer: Zietsman Oosthuizen

The last race of the day has a field of 13 but looks to be a straight shootout between Canford Queen and Sesame. Royal Mermaid has shown good form (2-3-9-5-2-1), but Canford Queen is my girl for the last race of the day. She burst ahead and led the pack by three lengths for most of her last race, only to be pipped to the post.

Her team will have analysed the race and might hold her back at the start a bit to ensure she has the legs to finish faster. The jockey who pipped her in that last race was Andrew Fortune, who is a top jockey and will be certain to get the most out of her as he has her reins for Race 8.
