Race 1 – Eyecatcher (4)

A 16-strong field racing over 1000m is sure to be chaos and offer a close finish. I can see a handful plus change of runners pushing for the line, but Eyecatcher literally caught my eye. The 3-yr-old bay filly is up against 13 other debutants and two horses with one race behind them.

Eyecatcher is sired by Gimmethegreenlight, SA’s 2nd Leading Sire in 2024/25 and Champion Sire of 3yo’s and 2yo’s in 2023/24 and 2022/23. Eyecatcher has been running well in training and my sources suggest she could take it by a length in what should be a super tight race for much of the going.

Race 4 – Swift Serenity (5)

The field of 10 looks set to be left in the dust by the trio of Swift Serenity, Love Her Madly and Starting Point. In a field lacking any wins in their last five races, Swift Serenity comes into the race with the best form.

In her last nine races the 4-yr-old bay filly has picked up three third places, one second, a fourth, a fifth and a sixth. Her last three races saw her finish 2-5-3, and with her workload having been carefully managed over the last year she should have the legs to pull off a maiden victory.

Race 8 – Dame of Trix (5)

Jockey: Luyolo Mxothwa | Trainer: J. Crawford

Despite the field being cut to just seven runners, this looks like a photo-finish between four strong horses. Tanneron, Shesgotclass, Dame of Trix and Pink Pigeon. All three have taken the tape in their last two races, with Dame of Trix running a sensational 1-2-1-3-1-3 in her last six outings.

Pink Pigeon and Shesgotclass have better odds, but Dame of Trix showed her resolve in her last race, despite finishing third over the slightly longer five furlong track. She’s taken a win three times in six races, so she seems ready for another wreath.

Race 11 – Azzurri (1)

Jockey: Callan Murray | Trainer: Lucinda Woodruff

The race day ends with 15 horses racing over 1200m for a purse of R145,000. In a field full of recent winners, I’m backing the apparent long-shot in Azzurri, the 6-yr-old bay gelding who is a three-time winner whose last win came over six months ago.

In his eight races since he has placed third and fourth twice, as well as second and fifth once. He fought through a large field in his last race to power through to claim third place in a powerful run, so he should have the appetite to fight for the win.

Eyecatcher to take the opener, Swift Serenity to pull clear of the pack in Race 4, Dame of Trix to continue her fine form, while Azzurri to clinch the last race of the day with a stunning run to take it by two lengths.
