Race 2 – Duchess of Paloma (1)

Jockey: Callan Murray | Trainer: J. Crawford

The 10-horse field should provide a thrilling finish to the 1600m course for the Youcanbetonus! Maiden Plate. Kensal Green (5.00) is a 3-year old bay filly with two third places from her three career starts, so she’ll be in the running, but I see the two 4-year-olds Winds of Grace (5.00) and Duchess of Paloma (3.50) nosing it at the finish, with another 3-year-old—Witching Hour (5.00)—just a snort behind them. I’m calling it for the Duchess as she has the inside lane and placed second here at Turffontein a fortnight ago.

Race 4 – The Ultimate King (1)

Jockey: G Lerena | Trainer: A. P. Peter

The Ultimate King seems a shoe-in to take this by a length or two, coming off the back of a string of top placings (3-2-1-1-1-2-5), but enjoying good rests inbetween. The 4-year-old bay gelding has had 27 days with his hooves up and resting, so he will be itching to hit the 2000m track. Pumpkin Pie (.00) has two wins in his last five runs and Eiger Sanction’s (.00) last race was a win, but coming just 15 days ago it will have taken some oomph out of the bay’s 5-year-old legs.

Race 6 – Winston’s Wonder (10)

Jockey: Kabelo Matsunyane | Trainer: S. T. Pettigrew

Coming from the outside I’m fancying the 3-year old chestnut gelding Winston’s Wonder’s well rested legs to take a battle royale in Race 6. Winston’s Wonder has had three career starts since debuting in early August, placing 3-2-1, and not having raced since his win on 11 September he should be fit and firing. Offering great value is the 8-year-old After Hours (17.00) who could challenge Winston’s Wonder despite running just eight days ago to stretch his legs (he finished 12/13), but he’s picked up two wins in his last four races so is not to be discounted.

Race 8 – Merryweather (5)

Jockey: S'manga Khumalo | Trainer: J. J. van Vuuren

Merryweather is the runaway favourite in Race 8, and the word is that the 3-year-old bay filly could take it by a few lengths. Her last outing after an 80-day break and a change of owner was a third place at Turffontein a month ago… but her previous race saw her beat 13 other runners to first place with a tremendous late burst that saw her home by a couple of lengths. Royal Horizon (13.00), Paris Fun (17.00), Zahra Dominia (17.00), Universal Girl (8.00) and Northern Kitten (11.00) have all won one of their last two races, so it’s a competitive field.

Verdict

Turffontein racing

Duchess of Paloma to pip Winds of Grace, while Ultimate King to run away with his fourth win in six outings.

Winston’s Wonder to take Race 6, while Merryweather looks set to run away with the last race of the day.
