South Africa at the FIFA World Cup - Three Group Stage Exits
South Africa’s participation in the FIFA World Cup began after their re-entry to global football in the 1990s, following the end of apartheid. Bafana Bafana have appeared at three World Cups (1998, 2002, and 2010 as hosts), but have never reached the knockout stages. Their best performance came in 2002, narrowly missing progression after a tied finish with Paraguay. South Africa made history in 2010 as the first African host but were eliminated in the group stage. Expectations now turn to 2026 with optimism under coach Hugo Broos.
