South Africa outplayed Namibia in every department in the 1st ODI despite fielding three debutants. Namibia have been competitive in T20Is but have really struggled to find their feet against top-ranked ODI sides, so they should be facing another big defeat.

The Namibian bowlers took a pounding at the hands of the Proteas, with only JJ Smit

(1/59, econ 5.90) going for under 6.4 runs to the over. Ruben Trumpelmann followed up figures of 3/24 and 2/41 in his last four matches by taking 4/68 in the 1st ODI, knocking over four of the Proteas’ top five.

Malan Kruger (34 off 60) and Alexander Busing-Volschenk (15 off 34) took Namibia past 50 without loss, only to lose six wickets for 70 runs. Smit hit three fours and two sixes in a 20-ball 31 but with little support Namibia ended on 162/8 off 31 overs after the breaks for rain.

South Africa Form

Jordan Hermann got his ODI career off to a magnificent start in the 1st ODI, smashing 150 runs off just 126 balls, with 17 fours and three sixes to set the Proteas on the path of a monster 348/6 off their 50 overs. Connor Esterhuizen scored 88 and 32 in his two previous knocks before being dismissed for 10 in the 1st ODI. Tony de Zorzi got back into form with an 84-ball 72 against Namibia after some low scores.

Prenelan Subrayen has been in superb form with the ball, taking 4/29 in the 1st ODI on the back of figures of 3/32, 2/27, 1/22 and 1/41 in his previous four matches. Duan Jansen has also been in superb form for the Proteas, taking 12 wickets in five matches, with three three-fors. Kwena Maphaka has been bowling well and keeping things tight although he had just two wickets in four matches before taking 2/32 in the 1st ODI.

Namibia’s top order failed to get to grips with the Proteas attack, but they are likely to keep the faith with their chosen XI rather than ringing the changes. Namibia have lost the last two games at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek.
