Egypt were the first African and Arab nation to appear at a FIFA World Cup, making their debut in 1934.
Despite winning the Africa Cup of Nations a record number of times, the Pharaohs have struggled to make deep World Cup runs, never advancing beyond the first round/group stage.
Between 1934 and 1990, they had a 56-year gap between qualification for World Cups.

1934 FIFA World Cup - Italy
Egypt made history as the first African and Arab nation to play at a World Cup. The 1934 tournament used a straight knockout format, so Egypt played only one match.
The Pharaohs lost 4–2 to Hungary in the Round of 16, but forward Abdelrahman Fawzi became the first African player to score at a World Cup, netting both Egyptian goals. Despite the defeat, Egypt’s participation was a landmark moment for African football.

1990 FIFA World Cup - Italy
After a 56-year absence, Egypt returned to the World Cup under coach Mahmoud El-Gohary.
Egypt produced disciplined defensive performances throughout the group stage. They earned a famous 1–1 draw with the Netherlands thanks to a penalty scored by Magdi Abdelghani, then held the Republic of Ireland to a 0–0 draw. A narrow 1–0 defeat to England ended their campaign.
Although Egypt failed to progress, they finished with only one loss and gained worldwide respect for their organisation and resilience.

2018 FIFA World Cup - Russia
Egypt qualified for their first World Cup in 28 years under Argentine coach Héctor Cúper. Expectations were high because of Liverpool star Mohamed Salah.
Egypt narrowly lost 1-0 to Uruguay after conceding late in the game. Salah returned from injury to score against Russia in a 3-1 defeat and later scored a penalty against Saudi Arabia. Veteran goalkeeper Essam El Hadary also became the oldest player ever to appear at a World Cup at age 45.
Despite three defeats, Salah’s goals and El Hadary’s record were memorable moments for Egypt.
