2002 FIFA World Cup – Dream Debut

Senegal stunned the football world on their World Cup debut under coach Bruno Metsu.

In the opening match of the tournament, Senegal defeated defending champions France 1–0 thanks to a goal from Papa Bouba Diop.

They followed that with draws against Denmark and Uruguay to qualify for the knockout stages.

Senegal then defeated Sweden 2–1 after extra time in the Round of 16 before losing 1–0 to Turkey in the quarter-finals on a golden goal.

Senegal returned to the World Cup after a 16-year absence under coach Aliou Cissé, captain of the 2002 team.

They beat Poland 2–1 in their opening match, drew 2–2 with Japan, and lost narrowly 1–0 to Colombia.

Senegal finished level with Japan on points, goal difference, and goals scored but were eliminated due to having received more yellow cards — the first team ever knocked out by the FIFA fair play rule.

Overall World Cup Legacy

Senegal have produced one of the greatest World Cup moments in African football history by defeating reigning champions France in 2002.

They became only the second African team to reach the World Cup quarter-finals and reached the knockout stages twice in three appearances overall.

Senegal remains one of Africa’s most respected and competitive teams on the world stage, and have produced stars like Sadio Mane and El-Hadji Diouf, who both went on to play for Liverpool.
