Ivory Coast has appeared in three FIFA World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014), each time being eliminated in the group stages despite possessing a talented 'Golden Generation' with players like Didier Drogba and Yaya Touré. The Elephants struggled with difficult group draws but showed promise and resilience in their performances. Hopes remain for the future as they aim to finally reach the knockout phase, with their next opportunity coming at the 2026 World Cup alongside Germany, Ecuador, and Curaçao.

Cote d'Ivoire's FIFA World Cup history has seen them participate in just three tournaments. The country became independent in 1960 and joined FIFA in 1964.

They have appeared at the 2006, 2010 and 2014 editions of the World Cup.

2006 FIFA World Cup – Golden Generation Arrives

Ivory Coast made their World Cup debut in Germany under coach Henri Michel. Drawn into a difficult group with Argentina and the Netherlands, the Elephants impressed despite narrow defeats.
They lost 2–1 to Argentina and 2–1 to the Netherlands before defeating Serbia and Montenegro 3–2 in their final match to secure their first World Cup win.

2010 FIFA World Cup – Tough Group Again

At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Ivory Coast were coached by Sven-Göran Eriksson. Once again, they were placed in a “group of death” alongside Brazil and Portugal.

The Elephants lost 3–1 to Brazil, drew 0–0 with Portugal, and beat North Korea 3–0. Despite finishing strongly, they were unable to advance to the Round of 16.

2014 FIFA World Cup – Another Near Miss

Ivory Coast entered the 2014 tournament in Brazil under coach Sabri Lamouchi.

They started well with a 2–1 comeback victory over Japan but then lost 2–1 to Colombia. In the decisive final group match, the Elephants needed only a draw against Greece to qualify for the knockout stage.

However, a late penalty gave Greece a 2–1 win and eliminated Ivory Coast.

Overall World Cup Legacy

Ivory Coast are widely regarded as one of Africa’s strongest teams of the 2000s and 2010s, though they were unlucky with difficult group draws at multiple tournaments.

The Golden Generation featuring Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure, Kolo Toure and Salomon Kalou arguably underachieved.

They will hope to make the knockout rounds for the first time in 2026. They have been drawn alongside Germany, Ecuador and Curaçao.
