Newlands Test Records - Runs, Wickets and Historic Matches

Editor
Last updated: 1 hour ago

Newlands cricket ground in Cape Town has been a centerpiece of cricket history since hosting its first Test in 1889. The ground is known for its dramatic contests, from marathon totals to rapid collapses and record-breaking feats. Standout records include South Africa’s 651 against Australia (2009) and the shortest completed Test in history in 2024. Players like Jacques Kallis and Dale Steyn have dominated the record books at Newlands, making it both a fortress and a stage for the unexpected.

A Ground That Makes Cricket History

Since staging its first Test in March 1889, Newlands has built a reputation for spectacular scenery, moving new-ball deliveries and the ability to surprise even the strongest batting line-ups. The historic ground had hosted 61 Tests through the January 2025 match against Pakistan. It has seen marathon innings, startling collapses and one of the shortest completed Tests ever played.

A ground where nothing is safe

South Africa's 651 against Australia remains the ground's largest Test innings, but Newlands was also the scene of Australia's collapse to 47 all out in 2011 and New Zealand's total of just 45 in 2013. In January 2024 South Africa were skittled for 55 against India in a match completed in just 642 balls which was the shortest completed Test match in history.
