English Premier League Predictions - Round 8

Crystal Palace vs Newcastle United

Palace are eager to bounce back after their miserable 5-0 battering at the hands of Brighton, a result that exposed their back four against pace and movement. Newcastle also come into the weekend needing a response after losing 1-0 at home to Aston Villa. With both teams seeking to regain confidence, the early stages could be guarded, but the match should open up if either side scores first.

Palace have the advantage of Selhurst Park and their ability to press aggressively could prove crucial against Newcastle's build-up. The visitors are narrowly favoured in the market, so a Palace recovery at 2.65 provides a speculative home selection with worthwhile value.

Liverpool vs Brighton

Liverpool face a genuine test at Anfield against a Brighton side enjoying one of the strongest runs of the new Premier League season. Brighton crushed Crystal Palace 5-0 last weekend and have won four consecutive league games. Liverpool, meanwhile, edged Brentford 2-1 and remain dangerous at home despite their recent inconsistency.

Both sides favour proactive football and Brighton's willingness to commit players forward should create opportunities for Liverpool to counterattack. This has the makings of an entertaining contest rather than a cautious tactical stalemate.

Brighton deserve enormous respect but the home crowd and Liverpool's attacking options tip the balance towards the hosts.

Manchester United vs Bournemouth

United enter another pressure match after drawing 1-1 with Leeds in the league and suffering a heavy European defeat at Como. Results have been difficult to come by and the atmosphere at Old Trafford could become tense if Bournemouth start strong.

The visitors bounced back from earlier setbacks with a 2-0 home victory over Sunderland last weekend and have the pace to attack space behind United's defensive line. United remain favourites with bookmakers because of home advantage but their shortage of victories is difficult to overlook.

Bournemouth at 3.90 represents a bold away-win option for a fixture in which confidence could prove decisive.

Sunderland vs Leeds United

Sunderland are desperate to end a four-game losing run as Leeds arrive at the Stadium of Light hoping to build on their encouraging 1-1 draw against Manchester United. The home side's attack has struggled to turn pressure into goals, while defensive lapses have repeatedly left them chasing games.

Leeds have not been entirely consistent either but they have shown greater resilience in recent matches and will see this as a chance to collect valuable away points. Expect a competitive scrap with few clear openings if both teams prioritise defensive security. Leeds offer the narrower betting edge at 2.50 and a single goal may separate the teams.

Verdict

I’m backing straight-out wins on Sunday for Crystal Palace, Liverpool, Bournemouth and Leeds on what promises to be a cracker of Sunday action in the Premier League.
