Namibia vs Ireland 2nd ODI Predictions –Stirling to power Ireland to 2-0 lead

Editor
Last updated: 45 minutes ago

Ireland are favoured to win the ODI series against Namibia after a comprehensive 55-run victory in the first match. Key contributions came from Paul Stirling's half-century and Gavin Hoey's three wickets. Namibia's bowling, led by Loftie-Eaton, kept them competitive, but their batting struggled to form partnerships. Stirling and Balbirnie provided Ireland a solid opening, while Erasmus and Trumpelmann stood out for Namibia. Both teams are likely to retain similar lineups for the next match, with Ireland seen as the more balanced side.

Namibia vs Ireland Predictions

Ireland are backed to win again after controlling the first ODI with both bat and ball. Their 229/9 was not an imposing total, but the attack repeatedly broke partnerships and dismissed Namibia with more than 12 overs unused. Namibia have enough experience to respond, especially through Gerhard Erasmus and Trumpelmann, but Ireland look the more balanced side.

  • Ireland’s Paul Stirling scored 56 from 71 balls and shared a 70-run opening stand with Andrew Balbirnie.
  • Ireland’s Cade Carmichael made 45 from 80 deliveries against Namibia.
  • Ireland’s Gavin Hoey returned 3/29 from his 9 overs and was named Player of the Match.
  • Ireland’s George Dockrell took 2/22 to become Ireland leading wicket-taker (327 wickets).
  • Namibia’s Gerhard Erasmus has scored 76, 95 & 22 in his last 3 knocks.
  • Namibia’s Jan Loftie-Eaton took 4/36 to keep Namibia in the contest.
  • Namibia’s Ruben Trumpelmann struck 50 from 42 balls with three sixes against Ireland.

Head-to-Head

Ireland lead the historic first-ever ODI series against Namibia 1-0. Namibia beat Ireland in the 2021 T20 World Cup but Ireland should have far too much fire power in the 50-over format based on Thursday's 55-run victory.

Namibia Form

Namibia's bowling kept them competitive in the opening ODI of the series, particularly through Loftie-Eaton's 4/36 and Bernard Scholtz' control.

Namibia’s batting is the bigger concern after wickets fell regularly following a good start to their innings, with the result that a strong chase failed to develop. Trumpelmann's lower-order 50 provided some resistance but the hosts need far more from Van Lingen, Frylinck, Erasmus as well as their middle order.

Ireland Form

Coming off the back of a 4-0 ODI series thumping from an in-form Afghanistan, Ireland made a great start to their series against Namibia by kicking off with a composed win in Windhoek.

Stirling and Balbirnie gave the visitors a stable opening platform in the heat, after which Carmichael contributed 45. Namibia’s bowlers shared the workload effectively, with Gavin Hoey the key middle-overs wicket-taker, while Jai Moondra and George Dockrell each picked up two wickets.

Ireland will be looking for an even better batting performance after losing six wickets for 54 runs late in the innings.

Team News

Ireland used a balanced XI in the opener with Stirling leading and Lorcan Tucker keeping wicket. Andy McBrine returned to the side, while Hoey, McCarthy and Moondra formed part of a varied attack. Namibia are likely to retain the core of the XI that bowled Ireland to 229, with Loftie-Eaton pressing his case after four wickets.

Windhoek is forecast to be hot and sunny, around 34C, so batting first and avoiding a long chase in the afternoon heat has merit.

Namibia (possible XI): Michael van Lingen, Louren Steenkamp, Jan Frylinck, Gerhard Erasmus (c), Zane Green, Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton, JJ Smit, Ruben Trumpelmann, Waldo Smith, Jack Brassell, Bernard Scholtz.

Ireland (possible XI): Andrew Balbirnie, Paul Stirling (c), Cade Carmichael, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker, Curtis Campher, George Dockrell, Andy McBrine, Gavin Hoey, Liam McCarthy, Jai Moondra.

Verdict

Ireland are the clear favourites for the win after their 55-run triumph in the 1stt ODI. Stirling is the leading Ireland batting option after his assured half-century, while for Namibia Erasmus has been in great form with the bat.
