Australia vs British & Irish Lions Predictions

The question is whether the Lions will take their foot off the gas and whether Australia can match their performance from last weekend? The loss of Rob Valentini for the Wallabies is huge, but they will fight for this result. I believe the Lions will win but there is value on Australia in the eight-point handicap.

  • Australia have lost their last 2 matches by 8 & 3 points.

Head to Head

The B+I Lions have won the first two Test matches and lead the series 2-0.

Australia Form

Australia would have been in a strange position this entire week leading up to the third Test. They have performed far better than most expected them to but at the same time will feel like it should be 1-1 with the series on the line.

However, that isn’t the case as the series is already lost with the third match to play. Despite that, the Wallabies are in a far better position than they were this time last year and finally they have some hope of returning to the top five in the world.

In the first Test, the Wallabies were outplayed for the first 50 minutes but fought back in the latter part of the game to lose 27-19. Last week, Australia led for the entire game until the final seconds, losing 29-26 due to a controversial but correct refereeing decision.

There is no doubt that the hosts will want to avoid a 3-0 whitewash and will come out guns blazing this week. Whether that is enough to stop the Lions remains to be seen.

Australia Injuries & Team News

Rob Valetini put in a huge performance last week but misses out with a calf injury this weekend. He is replaced by Tom Hooper. Taniela Tupou makes a start in the front row while Nic White, veteran scrumhalf, gets a start in his final international match.

Harry Potter is also out injured which means Dylan Pietsch comes in on the wing. Carlo Tizzano misses out on the squad completely.

British & Irish Lions Form

The British & Irish Lions will be very pleased with their tour and having already secured a series win, will be looking for their first clean sweep since 1927.

The Lions have won all their games on tour including the first two Test matches. In the first Test, the B+I Lions put in a poor second half showing, allowing the Wallabies to get within eight points after dominating the first 40 minutes.

Last weekend was a cracking encounter, one the hosts dominated initially, building an 18-point buffer. However, a try just before the break put the Lions back in a decent position.

While the Lions slowly built their way to within touching distance of the Wallabies, it wasn’t all plain sailing. They have to dig deep and finally won the game after the hooter had sounded with a spectacular try.

Andy Farrell has made three changes to his squad and has also opted for a 6-2 split on the bench. Blair Kinghorn comes in on the wing for James Lowe in the first of two changes to the starting lineup. James Ryan starts in the second-row with Ollie Chessum dropping to the bench.

Verdict

I am backing Australia to get within eight points. It may be worth a small layout on a Wallabies win.
