Galatasaray vs Liverpool

Both teams are on a great run of form, the hosts winning eight of their last 10 matches while Liverpool have won seven of 10. Liverpool might be suffering from a loss of confidence after going down 2-1 to bottom-placed Wolves in the League in their second-last game.

Liverpool have scored 27 goals in their last 10 matches with no shut-out, while Galatasaray have scored 29 goals. Hard to know which way this will go, but both sides will want to go to the second leg at Anfield with a lead, so this is a three-plus goal game every way I look at it.

Atalanta vs Bayern Munich

Bayern have won 20 of their last 25 matches, scoring in every match and losing only away to Arsenal and at home to Augsburg. The German giants have also scored a staggering 79 goals in their last 25 games. Atalanta have won under half of their last 15 games, losing four and drawing four times.

On the road Bayern have won 17 of their last 20 games, with just one defeat (Arsenal). Atalanta are unbeaten at home in their last six matches (five wins), but have lost three and drawn five of their last 20 at home. Atalanta’s best chance is to stay strong at home and look for a lucky winner away in the second leg, so I’m backing a low-scoring draw.

Atletico Madrid vs Tottenham

Spurs have been superb in Europe in a season that has seen them tumble towards the Premier League’s relegation zone. The ‘romantics’ will be looking to back The Lilywhites to keep going in the Champions League, but this is the hard edge of the season and the opposition is getting tougher and more determined.

Spurs’ last five matches (all in the Premier League) have ended in defeat and their last 14 games have brought just two wins (D4, L8). Atletico have four defeats in their last 15 games but have won four of their last five games, losing only to Barcelona.

At home Atletico have won 19 of their last 23 games (D1, L3), while Spurs have lost seven and drawn three of their last 15 games, with just two wins and five goalless performances. With just 19 goals in their last 15 games, I’m backing Spurs to score one goal or less in an away defeat.

Atletico have conceded just 21 goals in their last 23 home games, so I see this as a win-to-nil.

Newcastle vs Barcelona

Barca are on a four-match winning streak, with eight wins in 10, while Newcastle have lost five and won five of their last 10 at home. Barca have scored 24 goals in 10 and Newcastle 23 in 10, although the Toon Army’s figures were boosted by a nine-goal bonanza against Qarabag.

Newcastle beat Man United at home but lost two at home to Man City as well as to Everton and Brentford at home in their last 10. Barca travel well, winning seven of their last 10 on the road and scoring 18 goals. Between them they are averaging close to three match goals, so I’m going for three-plus goals in a match that I can see ending in a high-scoring stalemate.

Galatasaray to press Liverpool hard after their loss to Wolves, while Atalanta to put the squeeze on Bayern.

Atletico Madrid to pull off a strong home win while Newcastle and Barcelona to entertain the crowd with goals.
