Australia vs British & Irish Lions Second Test Preview & Tips

Australia were not good enough with or without the ball in the opening Test against the British & Irish Lions, with their hopes of securing an unlikely series win now hanging by a thread.

Despite not completely clicking in the first Test, the class in this Lions squad shone through at the weekend as they eased to a 27-19 win over their hosts.

  • Australia have lost three of their last four international matches
  • The Lions have won their last seven tour matches
  • Australia have lost by eight points or less in their last two defeats

Head To Head

The Lions have won three of their last four against Australia, with their 27-19 win in the first test meaning they have been perfect since landing in Australia (P7, W7).

Australia Form

Australia have been on a worrying run of form heading towards their series with the Lions, and the first Test showed no signs that their fortunes will improve much.

Wins over England (42-37) and Wales (52-20) last year promised a turning point, but they have since lost three of their next four Tests. Defeats to Scotland and Ireland saw their tour in 2024 end in defeat, while their 21-18 win over Fiji failed to inspire.

Perhaps the hope was that facing an opponent that travels to these shore every 12 years would see this Australia squad play outside itself. They did not manage this.

The Aussies were lucky to still be in the game in the first-half, and while they dominated the ball in the second-half, they were not good enough to do anything of note with it. Injuries have cost them a number of key players, but the home side are well below the required level to have a serious chance of beating the tourists.

British & Irish Lions Form

The Lions were not perfect in game one, but their 27-19 win over their hosts saw a side that have only been together for a matter of weeks prove they are far better than the home team.

Andy Farrell’s decisions on his 23 for the first Test were vindicated, with Tom Curry in particular a menace. While the calls for Wales’ Jac Morgan to start at seven were loud, they have been dulled by Curry’s performance in the first Test, with his dominant tackling a particular highlight.

While the Aussies will likely come back with renewed vigour as they look for a way to stay in the series, I do not see anything other than a second Lions win that secures the series. Honestly, it is frustrating to see such a strong Lions side having to play an Australian team at such a low ebb.

While I do not expect a massive win on the scoreboard, I do predict that the tourists will win again.

Verdict

I am backing the Lions to secure the series with another win, with the winning margin standing at between 1-12 points.
