Waratahs vs British & Irish Lions Predictions

The B+I Lions have looked very good in their opening two games in Australia. Given that they’ve scored 50+ in their last two games, I am backing them to win by more than 39.5 points.

  • Waratahs have lost 5 of their last 6 matches.
  • British & Irish Lions have won their last 2 matches.
  • British & Irish Lions have scored 50+ points in their last 2 matches.
  • British & Irish Lions have covered the -39.5 handicap in their last 2 matches.

Head to Head

These two have not met in recent years.

Waratahs Form

The Waratahs again failed to qualify for the Super Rugby playoffs this year, however, unlike 2024, when they propped up the table, they got to eighth this time around.

The Tahs’ failed to win away from home all season, but their home form was very impressive, up among the top sides in the tournament. They will lean on that confidence ahead of this clash against the B+I Loins.

Unfortunately, the Tahs’ ended the season poorly, losing five of their last six games. Their only victory in that period came against the Western Force.

Waratahs Injuries & Team News

While the Waratahs are missing players to the national side, they still have seven internationally capped players in their squad.

British & Irish Lions Form

The British & Irish Lions are growing in confidence every time they play and are starting to look more and more like the side to challenge the Wallabies on 19 July.

The Lions began their tour in Dublin, losing 28-24 to Argentina. However, they have bounced back well with two convincing wins. Against the Western Force, the B+I Lions cruised to a 54-7 victory in a match they completely dominated.

Things were tougher against the Reds on Wednesday. The Lions led 22-12 at half time in a competitive first 40. They streaked away in the second stanza, winning the match 52-12.

British & Irish Lions Injuries & Team News

Finn Russel played the last two games at 10 so he gets a break here with Fin Smith taking over the flyhalf jersey. England teammate, Alex Mitchell starts at nine with Marcus Smith on the bench. There is a host of changes once again, as was expected.

Verdict

I am backing the British & Irish Lions to cover the -39.5 handicap.
