This could be a cracking Friday night Currie Cup fixture. The Cheetahs are one point clear of Griquas and the winner here will go a long way to securing a top two finish. I am backing the Cheetahs to cover the -8.5 handicap.

The Cheetahs go into the penultimate week of the 2025 Currie Cup at the top of the table. They have won four of their last five matches.

The Bloemfontein-based outfit began the season poorly, losing out 37-35 to the newly promoted Boland Cavaliers. However, the Cheetahs have won their four matches since, starting with a 42-25 home success against the Pumas before seeing off the Sharks 7-5 in Durban.

That was followed by another home win, beating Western Province 31-24. Last weekend, the Cheetahs flew out of the blocks against the Lions, although the Lions bounced back in the second half to get within a score of the Cheetahs.

Two late scores by the Cheetahs saw them win 47-31, but it was closer than the scoreline suggests.

The Cheetahs may rest some players for this fixture despite it being a big match for them. They only have two games to go before the playoffs and won’t want to lose momentum now.

Griquas Form

Griquas are third on the table, just one point off their hosts and Boland. They have also won four of their five games.

Similar to the Cheetahs, Griquas lost their first match of the season, going down 49-28 at the Pumas. They bounced back a week later to beat Boland 48-39 at home before thrashing Western Province 47-7.

Again, at home in round four, Griquas beat the Sharks 26-17 and last week beat the Bulls away 42-21. The latter result will give them a load of confidence ahead of this fixture against their neighbours.

Griquas, like their hosts, may be forced to rest one or two players this week and another couple next week. Making wholesale changes now when a negative result could have huge implications makes little sense.
