Bayonne and Stormers clash in a highly anticipated Champions Cup match. Bayonne, unbeaten at home, enters the game confidently after a strong showing in the Top 14, currently holding the fifth position with seven wins. They recently edged out Lyon and only see an undefeated home streak. Despite making lineup changes, the Stormers are formidable, topping the URC table. They aim to leverage their away victory momentum, winning four consecutive European away games. The match promises a thrilling encounter with Bayonne slightly favored to cover a -1.5-point handicap.

Bayonne vs Stormers Predictions

This is a cracking Friday night game to look forward to. Bayonne are unbeaten at home this season while the Stormers have won their last four away. The handicap sits at 1.5 in Bayonne’s favour.

Given the changes the Stormes have made and Bayonne’s form at home, I am backing the hosts to cover the -1.5 handicap.

  • Bayonne have won their last 6 home matches.
  • Stormers have won their last 6 matches.
  • Stormers have won their last 4 away matches.

Head to Head

This is the first-ever meeting between the Stormers and Bayonne.

Bayonne Form

Bayonne have had a good first few months in the Top 14, winning seven of their 11 matches. They currently sit fifth on the table.

That will five the French club confidence heading into this Champions Cup opener. Bayonne have won all six of their home matches this season while they only managed one away victory.

Last weekend, Bayonne held on to beat Lyon 22-20 at home in a nail-biting clash. They lost away to Racing 92 the week before but thrashed Montauban by 42 points the week prior to that on home soil.

Bayonne Injuries & Team News

Former Stormers scrumhalf and 2019 Rugby World Cup winner, Herschel Jantjies starts for Bayonne at scrumhalf. Joris Segonds is at flyhalf.

Stormers Form

The Stormers had a disappointing campaign last season, both in the URC and Champions Cup. They have, however, come out this campaign firing and looking every bit of the team that can challenge on multiple fronts.

Currently the Stormers top the URC table with six wins from six. They achieved a remarkable comeback last weekend to beat Munster away.

A poor first half display from John Dobson’s side saw Munster go into the break 21-6 up. But the Stormers came out firing in the second 40, winning the game 27-21.

That was also their fourth successive away win in Europe.

Stormers Injuries & Team News

The rugby season is long for South African players, so it is understandable that John Dobson has made some changes. Springbok prop, Ntuthuko Mchunu will make his Stormers debut while captain, Salmaan Moerat will play his 50th game for the Cape side.

There is also a new halfback paring with Clinton Swart at 10 and Imad Khan at nine.

Verdict

Bayonne are backed to cover the -1.5 handicap on home soil this Friday against the Stormers.
