The Christchurch-based outfit made a winning start in the first round, defeating Northland 31-15 at home. They were then well beaten 22-7 at Tasman before defeating Auckland 27-21 away.

It was a double header week for Canterbury as they had a Wednesday game against defending champions, Hawkes Bay. Canterbury lost 27-21 at home. Last weekend, Canterbury put in possibly their worst performance to date, losing 46-21 at home to Wellington.
