Edinburgh vs Bulls Preview & Tips

The Bulls found their feet in Europe last weekend with an impressive win in Cardiff. They will be looking to back it up against an Edinburgh side that has struggled the last two weeks. I’m backing the visitors to get their second win on tour.

Head to Head

Edinburgh and the Bulls have never met before.

Edinburgh Form

Edinburgh are currently placed fifth on the United Championship table with nine points from their opening three matches. While on the surface it looks like a reasonably good start, they would have expected to win all three of their matches, opposed to just the one.

The season started with a good 26-22 home win against Scarlets but Edinburgh then suffered a surprise 28-27 defeat at Benetton. They led comfortably during the match but a poor second half display saw the hosts come back and snatch the victory.

Last time out Edinburgh again started strong, this time at home against the Stormers. After a dominant opening 20 minutes at which point they led 14-0, Edinburgh fell off the pace. It ended 20-20 but could easily have been another defeat for the Scots.

Edinburgh Team News

Edinburgh are not expected to make wholesale changes to their side. Barring any late injury concerns, we could see a similar lineup to last week.

Bulls Form

The Bulls came into the United Rugby Championship as Currie Cup champions for two successive years. They were widely expected to be the strongest South African side, but failed to deliver in the first two weeks.

A 31-3 loss at Leinster on the opening weekend was followed by a 34-7 defeat to Connacht. That represented the worst possible start for the Bulls who scored just one try in those two matches.

Last week looked to be heading in a similar direction against the Cardiff Blues. They were 16-3 down at half time but rallied superbly in the second half to win 29-19. It was a magnificent second half performance and more of what has been expected of the Jake White’s men since arriving.

Bulls Team News

Johan Goosen went off early last week with what looked like a serious knee injury. He is expected to be out for a few months.

Chris Smith, who performed admirably off the bench, starts at flyhalf. Morne Steyn has flown in from South Africa as cover for the number 10 jersey.

Lizo Gqoboka and Mornay Smith both return to the front-row while Muller Uys starts at eight.

Verdict

Bulls come off a morale boosting win last weekend while Edinburgh have lost and drawn their last two. I am backing the South African side to continue their momentum with a win here.
