New Zealand have beaten Argentina convincingly in their last three matches but Argentina have been good this year and the All Blacks have not been themselves. With the handicap set at 21 points, I can only see value in backing Argentina to cover.

New Zealand have won 31 of their 33 matches against Argentina. They drew in 1985 with Argentina’s only ever win coming in 2020 in what was a huge upset. Last year the All Blacks beat the Argentines 39-0 and 36-13.

New Zealand are having a poor season by their lofty standards. The pressure has been on the team and the coaching staff since late last year when they had a poor tour of Europe.

After losing to France and Ireland convincingly to end 2021, the men in black began 2022 with a 2-1 home series defeat to Ireland. That was followed by a convincing 26-10 defeat to South Africa to start the Rugby Championship.

The All Blacks however bounced back the following week in typical style, beating South Africa 35-23 at Ellis Park. It was a magnificent performance by New Zealand but questions marks remain as to whether they can continue those kind of performances.

Ian Foster has shown faith in the side that beat South Africa, naming an unchanged lineup for Saturday.

Argentina Form

Argentina were poor throughout 2021 and suffered convincing defeats in all six of their Rugby Championship matches. Their season should however be put in perspective though as they were away from home throughout 2020 and 2021 – tiredness simply caught up with them.

Contrary, 2020 was magnificent for Los Pumas. They drew twice away against Australia and managed to defeat New Zealand for the first time in their history.

This year Argentina have looked sharp, even after losing their opening Rugby Championship match 41-26 to Australia. They bounced back to defeat the Wallabies 48-17 the week after.

Michael Cheika’s hand has been forced through injury as he named three changes. Juan Imhoff and Jeronimo de la Fuente are missing from the backline while prop Francisco Gomez Kodela is also out.

Lucio Cinti comes in on the wing with Matias Moroni taking over from De la Fuente.

New Zealand are favourites at home but the form of the two sides gives Argentina a chance this weekend. I am backing Los Pumas to get within 21 points with another unit placed on an upset win for the visitors.
