The truncated 2023 Rugby Championship kicks off on 8 July 2023. New Zealand are favourites to retain their title ahead of South Africa, Australia and Argentina.

Due to the Rugby World Cup later this year, this season each team will face the other only once in order to give teams more time to prepare ahead of the World Cup.

This means the fixtures and where each team plays the other plays a huge role in who will be favourites. New Zealand play in Argentina for their opener but before that the Springboks host Australia.

In round two South Africa travel to New Zealand which is likely to decide who will be champions. Australia can however not be written off given their improvement in recent years, and with Eddie Jones now at the helm

Bookmaker bet365 has New Zealand priced at 1.72 to win the tournament with South Africa paying 2.87. Australia are outsiders at 7.00 with Argentina at 26.00.

But, the World Cup will not only affect the number of games it could also have a huge effect on individual games. Teams are likely to play weakened teams on occasion to give game time to fringe players, which may lead to unexpected results.
