England vs Australia Predictions - Wallabies to challenge England at Twickenham

England faces Australia in an exciting rugby clash, with England entering the game on a seven-match winning streak after recovering from a shaky start in the recent Six Nations. Australia, guided by Joe Schmidt, is on the rise again despite recent losses, including a close win over Japan. Both teams lack certain star players due to their commitments elsewhere. While England has historical dominance, Australia is expected to keep the scoreline tight, potentially staying within a 9.5-point margin, making for a thrilling encounter on the field.

England vs Australia Predictions

England have selected a slightly experimental side for this game, although most of the players are capped at international level. I expect Australia, who have played a lot recently, to challenge the English and get within 9.5 points.

  • England have won their last 7 matches.
  • England have won 10 of their last 12 matches against Australia.
  • Australia won their last match against England.
  • Australia have either won or lost by less than 9.5 points in their last 3 matches against England.
  • Australia have lost 4 of their last 7 matches.

Head to Head

England have won 10 of their last 12 matches against Australia. However, in 2024, the Wallabies scored a dramatic last minute try to beat England 42-37 at Twickenham.

England Form

England are in a far better place than they were in 2023 and before. Borthwick has gotten the team playing exciting rugby and they are once again challenging and beating the best sides.

This year has been a solid year for the English. They have lost just one game in eight and have won seven on the bounce. The Six Nations began with a 27-22 away defeat to Ireland but was followed by a 26-25 win over France at home and a 16-15 victory against Scotland, also at home.

Italy and Wales were both comfortably swatted aside to end a positive Six Nations campaign, although it did not result in the title. In July, England played two tests against Argentina, winning both with a team that was without their British & Irish Lions players.

Their last game took place on 20 July when England saw off the USA 40-5.

England Injuries & Team News

George Ford has been rewarded for his superb form in July against Argentina with a starting spot at flyhalf. Maro Itoje captains the side. Tommy Freeman starts at 13 outside Northampton teammate, Fraser Dingwall. Henry Pollock has to make do with a spot on the bench, as does Fin Smith and Tom Curry.

Australia Form

Much like England, Australia had a few dark years recently, culminating in a group stage exit at the 2023 Rugby World Cup. The arrival of Joe Schmidt has certainly revitalized Australian rugby over the last 24 months.

The recently completed Rugby Championship saw Australia manage two victories, but their overall performance was much improved compared to 2024. They caused a major upset in Johannesburg against South Africa in the opening round and were not too far from repeating the feat a week later against the Springboks.

They returned home for two games against Argentina of which the Wallabies won one and lost one. They were slightly fortunate to win the first one, relying on yet another comeback. In the second fixture, Los Pumas held on for the win.

The Aussies followed that by losing home and away to the All Blacks but were very competitive in both games and had a few things gone their way, results could have been different. What Joe Schmidt will want to see this Autumn is better starts from Australia. They have consistently been 15+ points down at the break and needed comebacks to get victories.

Last week, the Wallabies beat Japan 19-15 in a tough match which was played by quite a few fringe players.

Australia Injuries & Team News

Australia do not have access to their overseas-based players this weekend as the international block only starts next weekend. Schmidt will certainly make changes from the team that featured against Japan last weekend.

Verdict

England have not played together since the Six Nations as their July fixtures were played without quite a few stars who were with the B+I Lions. It may take time to click as a unit, so I am backing Australia to get within the +9.5 handicap.
