Head to Head

The All Blacks just managed a 16-15 win last week against England.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand ended 2023 with a World Cup final defeat to South Africa, but it was a final not many expected them to reach given their early form in the tournament.

Regardless of the final results, the All Blacks did well to reach the final of the showpiece event. This year, under new coaching staff, was expected to be a year of rebuild, but they are always expected to get results.

Last weekend, the All Blacks showed plenty signs of rustiness against the English. Despite a bright start, New Zealand struggled to really create too much thereafter, allowing England to force their game onto them.

In the end, New Zealand managed a 16-15 win, narrowly avoiding defeat. This week could be just as tight if the All Blacks don’t take their chances and keep England in the game.

New Zealand Injuries & Team News

Scott Robertson will almost certainly tinker with his side a bit. It is still early in the season so he will want to test some combinations.

England Form

England were superb in the opening Test last weekend. While defeat will hurt because they easy could have won that game, something they don’t often do in New Zealand, they will still be proud of the effort.

The forwards more than held their own against the hosts, even dominating at stages. And it wasn’t boring old England, they played some good stuff in the 16-15 defeat.

Marcus Smith missed a crucial kick at goal in the first half which could have made a difference. In general, the flyhalf played well, but he will be under pressure this Saturday with his goal kicking.

England Injuries & Team News

England will likely be forced into a couple of changes if the injury news is to be relied upon. However, Steve Borthwick will likely want a couple fresh faces in there anyway.

Verdict

I am backing England to get within 10 points of New Zealand at Eden Park. This game should also have a few more points on offer.
