The result is hardly in question here as Scotland should win with ease. However, the Scots have to match the victory margins of Ireland and South Africa (70+ points) if they are to stay in the qualification hunt.

The handicap is set at 59 points which I feel Scotland will cover given how poor the men in yellow have been thus far.

Romania have lost their last 4 matches by 50+ points.
Romania have lost their last 2 matches by 74 & 76 points.

Head to Head

Scotland have won their last seven matches against Romania. They last met in 2011 so not much can be read into this.

Scotland Form

Scotland are a superb rugby side and would very likely have progressed from Pool C or Pool D. Unfortunately, with the draw taking place three years ago, they ended up in a group with the top two ranked sides in the world.

The Scots lost their opening match 18-3 to South Africa before bouncing back to beat Tonga comfortably last weekend. Ireland beat South Africa which makes things tough for Scotland now.

What is clear is that Scotland will have to beat Ireland in their final game to even get close to qualifying. However, should that happen, points difference will come into play. That is what makes this game so important as Ireland and South Africa beat Romania by 70+ points.

Scotland will at the very least have to match that and then beat Ireland to have any chance of a quarter-final berth.

Despite them needing to run in tries for fun, Scotland will see this as an opportunity to rest some players. But I don’t foresee a complete overhaul from Gregor Townsend as he will know the importance of this fixture.

Romania Form

Romania have been one of the few lowlights of the tournament to date. Just 18 months ago they were seen as a team capable of producing an upset as they ran a few tier one sides quite close.

However, their form has fallen off a cliff over the last year and a half. Prior to the World Cup they were hammered by both Georgia and Italy and were beaten by the USA.

Romania then lost 82-8 to Ireland in their World Cup opener. Their next match they lost 76-0 to South Africa and things will not be much easier against Scotland.
